History of Westeros
I highly recommend them. Excellent work and long videos, if you enjoy that. Here is the video.
LmL, I don't see the connection either to Dawn and the KG. Still the KG is based on the Night's Watch and there is certainly a chance that it has some connection to them. Then again the nickname of the KG are the White Swords... which Dawn certainly is.
Then we have the triangulation with the Others and their symbolism. Dawn is "pale as milkglass and alive with light," the Others have bones "pale as milkglass" and swords which are "alive with moonlight." The Others are called sword-slim, just as the KG are white swords and the SOTM is named for a sword. Dawn is supposedly a star-sword, a sword made from a fallen star, while the Others have eyes like burning stars. An invasion of Others is like an invasion burning stars, in other words.
Then we have the Others and the KG. Both are called white shadows. The KG has snow white armor, the Others have ice armor. The KG have moon pale cloaks, the Others shine with pale moonlight and are themselves called milky white. The Others swords, although made of crystal, are also called "pale swords" twice in the books, equating them loosely with white swords in symbolic terms. The KG are even called white ghosts or something like that in one scene where the fog is swirling. Then there is all the NK - Rhaegar / NQ - Visenya parallels I commented on above, so check those out.
Well I guess I did stick my foot in my mouth on that. I knew Visenya modeled the KG vows on that of the NW. Still my thinking that the KG as an institution is just about 300 years old. Dorne didn't even join the 7 kingdoms till roughly a 100 years ago. Arthur Dayne is the first and perhaps only Sword of the Morning to join the KG that we know of. Perhaps the Aegon and his sister fought against a SoTM during the Dornish Wars and were suitable impressed?? There is no hint of that in the World Book or any other source I can remember reading. Even more ironic when you consider that the KG was founded primarily to protect Aegon against the Dornish.
So yes the parallels are certainly there and I will go reread the NK - Rhaegar / NQ - Visenya parallels you mentioned above. I was thinking more on a historical connection not a narrative one.
