We know that Aerys seemed "madder" as the years went on, and really took a turn for the worse after Duskendale. I have to tell you though, I never really thought of Aerys being obsessed with tPtwP prophecy, but it makes sense. I think that most Targaryen's must know about it, and some do what they can to bring it about (Rhaegar, Aegon V, maybe Aerys) while others do what they can to keep it from happening (I am thinking of Baelor and his refusal to have children with his sister-wife).
A few more thoughts on Aerys and tPtwP prophecy - we have good reason to think he took it seriously for a number of reasons:
Neither Aerys nor Rhaella appear to have been interested in a brother-sister marriage but were married on the insistence of their father Jaehaerys who believed in the prophecy made by the woods witch. According to Ser Barristan, Rhaella was in love with Bonifer Hasty - a man who was out of the running anyway because of his low birth. Aerys himself was quite taken by Joanna Lannister. Barristan also revealed that the two were not particularly fond of each other so in effect, they married out of duty because their father believed the prince would be born of their line. That Aerys himself ordered Steffon Baratheon to go as far as Volantis in search of a bride for Rhaegar is another clue that he knew of the prophecy and took it seriously.
Rhaegar himself was preoccupied with tPtwP; we know this from Maester Aemon, they corresponded about it. Aemon knew about it, the topic a big theme for him shortly before his death. Rhaegar's knowledge of the prophecy could only have come from his family, most likely from his parents. He initially thought he was the prince but this notion must have come from somewhere, from his parents or from Aerys in particular. It definitely must have been an important issue in the family. In lieu of a Volantene bride, Elia as a second choice also suggests they were looking for a specific inheritance, she coming from a line with Targ blood.
We have no idea what else the wood's witch had to say on the matter but we do know that Melisandre uses tPtwP and the Azor Ahai prophecy interchangeably. I imagine Rhaegar decided to become a warrior because his scrolls suggested tPtwP = Azor Ahai, Azor Ahai being a warrior. Those same scrolls may also have had information on "waking dragons from stone." Viserys continually threatened Daenerys with waking his dragon. It's quite a specific phrase and his using it suggests that waking dragons was a topic in the family as well, especially since he was only a young child when he fled with Willam Darry. The idea of waking dragons connects directly to wildfire, which was used by a few misguided Targs in an effort to turn into a dragon or to hatch dragon eggs as in Summerhall. They obviously had no concrete information on how to actually hatch dragons but it would not surprise me if Aerys had also heard of the power of king's blood or the idea of sacrificing men by burning them to bring them to bring dragons back into the world.
