Yes, I should have said died in an attempt to save his father. Whether Brandon believed he could actually save Rickard or not, I think being faced with trying or not trying, a person is likely to try rather than watch a person you care for die in a horrible way without at least attempting to help.

I would be very curious to know how different Melisandre's training might have been from Thoros's or if they had the exact same training but their individual personalities made the difference in thier piety and worship?

Is it a purposeful omission by the author, or not!
"She wanted to come home, to rest beside Brandon and Father" AGOT-Eddard I, which almost implies that if Lyanna's bones are lying in the crypts, they are lying beside Rickard and Brandon's bones. Unless the statue is the important thing, and not the bones at all?
I really have no idea if those bones made it home to Winterfell, the text is vague in the extreme!
