Illyrio managed to get three dragon eggs for Dany. I am sure he has some stashed away with Blackfyre for Aegon.
That's my thinking as well.
Well lack of written history makes everything Pre Andal conquest suspect because the First Men used runes that no one knows how to translate and everything afterwards was written by the conqueror's (Andals) and gods know what the Maesters have tried to cover up over the years.
So everything is suspect which helps us not at all.
Indeed however the idea of Roose having access to the Winterfell library worries me. I am sure plenty of interesting things could have been discovered by Sam at the Wall given the time but he isn't there and Winter is coming.
I certainly hope that book that Arianne had in her room was Barth, it makes perfect sense concerning Dorne wasn't part of the Seven Kingdoms at the time all his books were burned and shows that Doran is certainly concerned with dragons.
We do see the andalisation of songs from the Age of Heroes and before, so that is something to keep in mind there as well as oral stories. Still, on the first page of the first book our attention is drawn to the stories told in the nursery which then is shown to be true during the prologue. So I think we have to combine them with what was written down by the Andals and the maesters to get closer to the truth.
Also, why the hell was Baelor so fanatic about Septon Barth's books on dragons? I really don't get it as we also hear that he was supposed to pray over his egg to get it to hatch. Of course, that might not have been the case, but it makes one wonder!
Thinking about the runes, could some of the people coming south of the Wall know how to interpret them? They haven't been andalized so that tradition might still survive beyond the Wall. Not many but some. The Thenns are the first to come to my mind here, as they seem so well organized compared to the others.
So you think some of the library survived the fire? We don't hear about the damage IIRC, but I certainly hope all was not lost. But as you say, Roose having his hands on it isn't reassuring... Narrative wise, I get that Sam couldn't spend Feast reading the Wall library as that would give too much away. Still, what is there would be interesting to know!
