Don't laugh but I immediately thought of Others, mae of pure ice and only weaknesses are dragonglass and dawn, could they be from the moon that cracked and are essentially had to live in on foreign land? And one question about broken sword with sapphires given to Jon, I know people say the sword is Waymard's although his sword is shattered, could the broken sword be Dark Sister instead? Taken to North by Bloodraven but was lost to him during his encounter with Children/Coldhands?
I do think the Other's could be a race that is nearly invincible except for one item, or at least source of power. We are given the impression that the Other's fear Valyrian steel (when they are looking over Waymar's sword) but his sword is not Valyrian, therefore they don't fear his weapon. That makes sense. What we do see they are vulnerable to is obsidian, which Samwell uses to kill on of the Other's with. Or at least he melts him with it. So, is Valyrian steel made with Obsidian? I don't think GRRM has denied that, although he has denied that Valyrian steel is made with dragonbone. Maybe obsidian will be the only major weakness of the Other's and it won't apply to a man-made blade at all. But I can see the Other's as this type of race, I just don't know how Luthor Tyrell, or any of the Luthor Tyrell's in the story work out to be their archenemies.
Besides obsidian being able to melt/steam an Other, we are also told from one of Old Nan's tales that they hate iron, and I think that could turn out to be important too. But we have seen what obsidian can do to them, and I can see that they would be cautious around it.
I myself think that sword hilt with the sapphires is probably Waymar's sword. Waymar's sword hilt is noted to have jewels, although they are not described in prologue specifically. As to Dark Sister, I would be surprised if a Targaryen sword would have three sapphires in the hilt. Usually that family is associated with rubies, such as in Aegon I's crown. And it would be Valyrian steel, so it would be very difficult for it to shatter, unlike Waymar's blade that shattered after several touches from the blade of the Other's.
There is the idea that Dark Sister must still be at the wall or north of the wall. Years and years ago, I wondered if it could have been Longclaw, but Longclaw is a bastard sized blade, and we have come to get information telling us that Dark Sister is a long sword that is slender enough for a woman to wield. Now, Dark Sister might be in Bloodraven's cave. I think it could still pop up there, but I don't think it would have sapphires, but I could be wrong about that. After all, some of the Targaryen's have bright blue eyes, which could be something they tried to emulate in that sword hilt. Back to Bloodraven's cave. Meera is there and is working on her sword work. She has Rickard's iron crypt sword but in the Bran chapter where they each took swords, it says she thinks it's to heavy, so a Valyrian steel light-ish sword might fit her perfectly. If she finds it. And she might.
Now, Blackfyre is another interesting Targaryen sword. At one point it was described as a great sword, then a long sword, but currently the wiki-describes is as a hand and a half sword. They don't have the reference for that clearly shown, so I am not sure where that information comes from. I have never seen it in the text of any of the published books, but I might have missed it. If it's true, that would be interesting, since Longclaw would also fit that size. But then that means Jeor Mormont flat out lied about the swords history. Which he might have, though! Still, it makes more sense to me that Blackfyre is in Essos, or perhaps now belongs to Young Griff/Aegon, or will soon, just because of the Golden Company's connection to that sword and the Blackfyre cause.
Rolly Duckfield wields a bastard sword but if it's Valyrian steel and Tyrion didn't notice that, I would be shocked.
