very reminiscent of glass candles?
Certainly, but because of caveat of the wall, I think it is more direct.
Always a continent?
No, It's just the example I was using as the most direct proof that they are definitely magical. There are certainly many others. Jon's hearing Ghost in his mind at the first scene is another example.
But we also have the oddness of Jon not being able to sense Ghost when they are separated by the wall, and I am not 100% convinced that the wall is blocking that.
I am. I cover it a lot in Summer's and Ghost's essays. It is very consistent.
Can they use the weirnet inspite of the wall?
That is how I think Bran entered Jon's wolf dream north of the wall. I mean it's pretty direct that he was a weirwood tree in the dream. That network spans the wall. The direct telecommunication the wolves share seemingly does not.
And if it's the direwolves sensing each other, that seems vague as well. Can they always? And if the direwolves could always sense each other, then they should be able to pass on through their bond with their human. If Ghost could sense Summer and Shaggy, then Jon should be able to know that both Bran and Rickon are alive. Same with Arya. If Ghost or Summer or Shaggy could sense Nymeria, and Nymeria can sense Arya, then Jon or Bran or Rickon should be to know that Arya is alive. Robb seems to be able to sense Grey Wind, but if Grey Wind can sense Arya, then shouldn't Robb know that Arya is alive. Robb plainly thinks Arya is dead and tells Catelyn this, as well.
Well, what we get from Jon's First ADwD wolf dream shows exactly what he can sense. At that time, there is not evidence of their bonded Starks. As the Starks further develop the sense we may get more, their to the wolves connection may be stronger and more persistent. It isn't yet. Until that happens, we won't know the constancy of the direwolves' connections.
Bran certainly sensed Jon inside Ghost in that dream I mentioned earlier, so it is possible that the starks can sense eachother eventually, too, either through their wolves or directly. As George has said, the magic is ramping up as we move forward in the series.
