whether i got it right or not - probably not! - at least i now know a lot more about these 'Ibbenese whalers' who turn up all the time!
I suspect they have a role to play in finding out the missing humans of the westeros dawn age, the key to the ironborn and the crannogmen. Working on it!

Really cool stuff, Arry. I must confess, I've never given a lot of thought to the people of Ib. This has really sparked my curiousity. Reminds me of biological anthropology. Mayhaps the Ibbenese are GRRM's homage to recently extinct hominids, like Neanderthals.
"I can see it. You have more of the north in you than your brothers."
arrysfleas, Damn! Nice job! My brain is going to need to read this more than once to come up with a logical train of thought, but you bring up some great ideas/ Need to reread, get through the comments and chew on this a bit. My only thought right now is that this would really add to the importance of the Baratheon line in all of this, which I think might be a point in favor of "R"+L=J as wolfmaid7 refers to it...
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?

thanks!
there are really two stories in one i guess, one about strong, courageous, wealthy and magnificent seamen who would have benefited with a place on their trade route to safeguard their stash, and one about a remarkable castle, seasoned with mythical lore, which would have necessitated some amazing builders.

i am not sure i follow your argument here but i can see the crows and ravens hanging around for more free food!
In this case, the free food is the massive number of carcasses produced by the violent behavior of mankind. The fourth book of ASOIAF, which largely focuses on the aftermath of the War of the Five Kings, ain't called "A Feast for Crows" for no reason...lol. This idea was half in jest when in popped into my head, but I think it might actually have legs.
So funny you brought this up Feather crystal and i had a post about this along time ago.We noted that while the other animals never came near farless ate the Wights. The Direwolves and crows were a different story.
Seem like the only ones that wont go hungry.

When winter hits, nothing is more essential or difficult to come by than a steady supply of food. Feels like the people who have gotten caught up in the wars have made a huge mistake by abandoning the harvest as a top priority. Though it seems to be quite a bountiful one for the crows and wolves.
"No true knight would condone such wanton butchery." "True knights see worse every time they ride to war, wench," said Jaime. "And do worse, yes." Brienne turned the rudder toward the shore. "I'll leave no innocents to be food for crows." "A heartless wench. Crows need to eat as well. Stay to the river and leave the dead alone, woman."

Sometimes, I feel as if we go a bit far in ascribing human-like motivations to the old races, but if we know one thing for certain, it's that everybody's gotta eat.

Question for you: why is the word 'iron' in the 'ironborns' and their islands? We know there is plenty of iron in the islands, so that satisfies this part of the question, but what of the people? I understand iron only turned up with the Andals hence the ironborn adopted this name after their conquest. If they had iron before, ie when reaving FM shores, it would have been noticed. Otherwise, iron was around before the FM, in the days of the dragonlords of the Battle Isles and the pre FM occupants of Westeros.
