The Others are trying to save humankind.
hmmmm...
The LN v1 brought doom and gloom to Westeros and this is remembered in the tales, songs and stories enlivened with various bogey men types such as blood seeking wights, white walkers, giants ice spiders, all together, the 'nameless' Others.
Bran has been shown what lies beyond the curtain of light into the heart of winter and he, who seems to enjoy creepy stories, then 'cried out, afraid, and the heat of his tears burned on his cheeks'.
More doom and gloom to come, I suspect. The comet is coming back after having circled the sun, ready to cause another LN cataclysm.
If this new apocalypse is coming from the the great north, it will only have one direction to spread its malevolence, SOUTH.
We have read of the wildlings slowly but surely being herded out of their territory north of the Wall by the sneeking cold mist (Tormund) and with minimal loss of life.
We have read of the NW, whose main aim was to prevent them from crossing the Wall, being lured north, trapped and attacked by a very large group of blood thirsty demons, the wights, at the Fist of the FM, causing a rout and eventual mutiny. Mutiny which resulted in the murder of their traditional leader, LC Mormont, and the loss of a sizable amount of their manpower.
This mutiny has enabled the coming of a new LC, Jon Snow, with a different background and guidance (Quorin Halfhand, Benjen's mate...) who has learnt that wildlings are men (and women kissed by fire) and that the role of the NW is to be 'the shield that guards the realms of men'.
Jon Snow has let the wildlings through the Wall.
We have also read of the reappearance of the white walker(s), to us readers and to Sam, an educated brother of the NW, further confirming the demons of the ancient children's tales. White walkers who by the way have only ever killed ONE man - that we know of (Waymar).
At that point, the looming threat from the north is becoming more real to all and sundry.
Jon has been re-arming the Wall, Melissandre has convinced Stannis of the threat of the Great Other, he is taking over the Nightfort, and they are getting ready to stand firm against the Others, at the Wall. There are some distractions such as the Boltons, but the overall picture is there.
But, as mentioned above, the new apocalypse has only one way to spread, SOUTH.
And south is the direction the Others are trying to send humankind.
They are trying to convince humans that they need to flee south and they are doing so the only they know will work. Fear of them. It worked for Gared, Stiv, Wallen and Osha.
If only humankind grasped that, they would flee south, all of them, to avoid being crushed or drowned when the doom and gloom sweeps from the north taking with it the Wall and, for example the Milkwater glacial lake [Clash, Jon 7], etc and causing massive floods, destruction and what have you.
They need to flee at least as far as Winterfell, a location known from the songs and tales, where salvation once took place; where the flooding doom and gloom may possibly come to rest.
ETA - needless to say that i have only come to this view thanks to numerous contributions from other readers.
