i guess I should have started a small questions thread, but does anyone know if the alchemists are trained at the Citadel? I just noticed this passage:
Once theirs had been a powerful guild, but in recent centuries the maesters of the Citadel had supplanted the alchemists almost everywhere. Now only a few of the older order remained, and they no longer even pretended to transmute metals
^^ are they implying that maesters at the Citadel are trained with wildfire too and replaced the alchemists? Mysterious...
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.” ― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
I always took it to mean that they were rival institutions. For some reason I swear that I read somewhere that the alchemists were around long before the maesters but I may have dreamed it. I could have taken the quote the wrong way too...
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?

Mayhaps you read it in the WB?
i think Hallyn or whatever his name is implies it's an ancient order, I'll let you know when they talk about themselves again

Possibly. Could have been a theory somewhere too. Will check when I get a chance.

Ok. Just got home a bit ago and checked the WB. They are referred to as the ancient guild of alchemists. Plus there's mentions of alchemists in Lys and lumped in with other magic peoples in Ashai. I think it might have been in a theory I read that the Citadel purposely went against the alchemists in an attempt to eradicate magic. None of the quotes I looked up confirmed this to be the case. So it could be possible that the citadel somehow learned the arts of the alchemists. Nothing on the surface seems to indicate they did, but nothing to refute it either.

Thank you for looking that up, I'm too tired today to research it more with you, but I'll have a look around again tomorrow. It would be interesting to hear about them more. I feel like they might have been tied with the Valyrian dragon lords, but that's a feeling, not based on anything concrete. I'll elaborate more later, but mostly because they seem to be focused in KL, and had close ties w/Targs. Like Rossart who was an alchemist hand, and Hallyn talks to Tyrion about how his father and grandfather advised Targ kings. Oh, and the Targ who died drinking wildfire.
i can't be arsed to find the quotes now, though ::shuffle::

Hear ya. Tired myself. Honestly just did a keyword search for alchemist on my kindle.
