Frankly I am of the opinion that something was sending visions to Balon to attack the North. I mean he spends a lot of time staring into the fire.
I think Dalton was referring to the probable war, I mean all the signs were there and war is good for the Ironborn. The whole Ironborn religion is weird and is a bit too Cthuluish to make me wonder.
Also is there a connection to the Storm god and the Storm kings Durrandon?
Euron seems to be interesting in defying the gods, or seems to think that the gods aren't real. He might be on to something.
While I think sacrifice for some mystic purpose is part of Euron MO I think there are other reasons for these men. Mainly depriving his enemies of their best men.
As you said Nute was Vicky's best man. Harras "The Knight" Harlaw (btw one of my favorite minor minor character) was Rodrick's chosen heir and an underappreciated badass. Drumm made a play for the Seastone chair and Andrik is his best warrior. Marlon Volmark is another political rival, House Hoare is noted several times to have black blood, so maybe it has some magic that we aren't aware of. So the weakening of political rivals is certainly a part of it.
Also I think Euron knows the Ironborn will not be able to hold the Shield Islands, now that these men are in charge the loss of the islands will not be Euron's loss but theirs.
As far as them having magical blood Marlon Volmark is the only one that makes sense to me.
