Sorry for the long title! But I thought we might be interested to discuss this video released by Fire & Blood YouTube channel, it is about House Dayne, Frey, and Tarly. The Dayne part is narrated by Ned and there he talks about his fight against Arthur.
And boi isn't it an interesting one, according to the video he didn't defeat Arthur with a single combat, Arthur died because he was stabbed in the back by a dagger, #ogcatspaw, but Arthur wasn't angry despite the betrayal, and knowing what awaited Ned in the Tower of Joy 🤔
Single combat has always seemed unlikely to me. But, based on Ned's memories of the event (or what seems to be the event), I have wondered whether it something other than combat, maybe steel and shadow coming together in some sort of ritual.
”And now it begins,” said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light. ”No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice, “now it ends.” As they came together in a rush of steel and shadow, he could hear Lyanna screaming. “Eddard!” she called. A storm of rose petals blew across a blood-streaked sky, as blue as the eyes of death.”
But my understanding is vague and half-formed and years of pondering hasn't produced a real theory. At it certainly wouldn't be below GRRM to have two noble warriors come together to have one stabbed in the back. I keep coming back to that bit between Arthur and Ned, "And now it begins," .."No, now it ends." Somehow, I don't think they were disagreeing on the facts or what was about to happen. For one, it was a beginning. For the other, it was and ending. But I'm not wedded that. Maybe there was a terrible surprise waiting for Ned in the Tower of Joy. So what do you think was waiting in that Tower? and if Ned didn't know about it, why was he there?
I am confused about ToJ stuff myself, especially after reading Arys Oakheart chapter when he is at Dorne, he talks about not wearing King's Guard cloak to not attract attention to himself, until Arianne's super secret plan to crown Myrcella where he wears white cloak, and we have ToJ with three Kings Guard waiting outside with no move to hide their identity, and that area is protected by Dornish soldiers during Robert's Rebellion, I am waiting for George to explain some tjings
