I don't really have an essay ready, but I did prepare this on a word processor first but I'm curious to know what you guys think of the Lord of Light. Is this a true force, or is it a parlor trick used by the likes of Mel to get what she wants? What about its source? Do you think there is a red god, or is the magic here for some other reason?
First off, Mel has red eyes. I need to do a search and see if Dondarrion's last eye was red, but Cat's eyes turned red after she became UnCat, from the last Brienne chapter, AFFC:
Her eyes definitely were not red beforehand. This makes me wonder if Mel is actually undead, too bad we don't have a description of Dondarrion's eyes to check, or Thoros- to see if it's a result of being resurrected, or a connection with serving R'hollor. I don't have a quote of Mel's eye color, but I remember they are red, and neither she nor Cat are albino.
Then we have Thoros, who seems to be able to bring Dondarrion back to life, over and over, and he admits this is a new development. I would like to think the comet or dragons brought back the red priest/priestess' powers, through R'hollor, but I think Mel had been on Dragonstone attending to Selyse for awhile before she was introduced. I searched my books for "red woman" "red priestess", and couldn't find anything, but I was sure there was a quote somewhere where a character was saying Stannis' wife had taken up with a red priestess some time ago.
We have the questionable sword belonging to Stannis, which is glamored, but Aemon says doesn't resonate heat. He dips his sword in fire so it lights up. However, it looks like there is a blood magic element to Lord Beric's sword, this is from the Arya chapter in Storm when the Hound duels Lord Beric:
I don't want this to be a never ending post, so just to add a couple more thoughts:
the kings blood business with the leeches. IIRC, some folks have reservations as to whether this worked or not. I have to reread that chapter, and I'm not there yet, but didn't she take credit for things that weren't really attributed to her, in other words, the deaths had already been planned? Bolton has been communicating with Tywin by the time Jaime and Brienne get to Harrenhal. Tywin had already been winning a war with letters a couple Tyrion chapters back.
Also, Joffrey's death had probably already been plotted out. Dontos had already told Sansa the getaway plan was during Joff's wedding, and I'm sure his fate was sealed right after Sansa's revealing lunch with Marg & Oleanna.
Mel's misadventures in fire-scrying. Is it because it's not a real magic, or is she just misinterpreting the images?
Glamoring. Ok, there has to be something to make this illusion.
There was also a quote in Clash, while Dany was in Qarth about the mages who were scarcely able to light a glass candle (paraphrasing) a year back, but now are climbing those ladders that go in the clouds. (And we find out in Feast that nobody had been able to light the obsidian candles, it was like an urban legend, right?)
*Also, I need to dig up the quote, I think it's when Cat meets Stannis and Mel in the field, she thinks how there were not so many red priests in W, but they were more popular/powerful in the Free Cities (paraphrasing). Is that why the glass candle trick works in Qarth, and not in Westeros yet? The Lightning Lord isn't strong there yet? Or??
Ok, this post is getting too wordy, but do you think the magic is from R'hllor? Dragons or comets? Or is magic a generic ability, and the gods are all fake?
(Watch someone jump out with an SSM stating where magic comes from)

The woman in grey hissed through her fingers. Her eyes were two red pits burning in the shadows. She spoke again.

Unsmiling, Lord Beric laid the edge of his longsword against the palm of his left hand, and drew it slowly down. Blood ran dark from the gash he made, and washed over the steel.
And then the sword took fire.
And then the sword took fire.
