Let's talk about Prophecy. I've spent some time, off and on, trying to pull apart two prophecies in particular: the Azor Ahai Reborn prophecy (AAR), and the Prince that was Promised prophecy (PtwP). And to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I've made a whole lot of progress. I do tend to think these are different things... or at least, that the prophesied figures are different. But it's hard to say whether there are actually two prophecies, or just one - interpreted differently by different communities - or whether folks have pulled from different sources to create prophecies they'd like to believe... or just what. Because frankly, we've got a small problem preventing such analysis: Martin doesn't give us the prophetic text(s). B-|
Anyway. I've drawn a few theories and conclusions of my own. But I'd like to know what you all think, if you're interested. So allow me to propose two starting points, and then a focus text - if you will.
Starting Points. Let's stipulate the following:
So here's that first report of the prophecy from Mel. We'll call it Patient/Prophecy Zero (Po):
There are some things missing from this statement, of course (eg, salt and smoke). And parts of it are rephrased elsewhere (eg, "red star bleeds," "bleeding star"). It's not clear whether Mel is quoting exactly what's written in the ancient books... or if she's paraphrasing. If this is an Asshai'i prophecy, or a prophecy of the Red Temple. But it's a starting place.
So what do you think? What, if anything, is missing? What, if anything, doesn't belong? What can be confirmed? What seems odd?
Who/what is Azor Ahai reborn? Who/what is the Prince that was Promised? And above all... WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN???

Starting Points. Let's stipulate the following:
- Melisandre of Asshai conflates AAR and PtwP, but is not completely correct in her interpretation of the prophecy (or prophecies).
- That said, her speech on Dragonstone before Stannis draws his magic sword provides the best place to begin this discussion.
So here's that first report of the prophecy from Mel. We'll call it Patient/Prophecy Zero (Po):
- "In ancient books of Asshai it is written that there will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him."
