Also, the fact that Illyrio was already wealthy before Varys came along to give him a boost is a real eye-opener to me....so much for being a poor braavo surviving on the streets. Also plays along with how a poor braavo manages to have a marble statue of himself at age 16 commissioned (I think markg171 noted that a while back). I think Illyrio has a very interesting backstory. The more I think on it, the more it makes sense that Illyrio's "poor bravo" days were more likely him being a rich kid of wealthy merchant/landowner parents (recall that Illyrio owns estates west of Pentos that he never visits or doesn't bother keeping track of that he mentions in ADWD--something that you might do if you weren't the one to "build them" yourself, but instead had inherited them from a previous generation who had, huh?) who wanted to "play" at being poor for a few years, because he could "afford" to.

Oh, and combing through all these has made me realize one thing for certain: Ashara Dayne is more than just a red herring for Jon's parentage. George has spent the past 15 years hedging about both her and Arthur. There is something there, and it will be big.I still say that a baby swap occurred between Ashara and Elia--either with Elia's knowledge or without her knowledge (Elia needed bedrest for 6 months--she might not have been fully "there" the entire time), and that when Ned came to Starfall and told her how "Aegon" died, Ashara knew her child was dead and committed suicide over it.
I think the parallel to watch would be Gilly in this case.
