We first met Jaqen chained in a wagon being led by Yoren to the wall. We know he was in the dark cells in King's Landing. He knew Arya was a girl from the start, and at Harrenhal, he knew she was Ned's daughter. After helping her escape, he changed identities, and was not seen again until the Feast prologue when he killed Pate after he received a mysterious key from the Citadel.
what was he doing in Westeros in the first place, and what landed him in the cells? If he was a known FM, surely he wouldn't of been released to Yoren, right? One would think, but he was among the two others chained up with him who were described as being quite dangerous.
What could his mission be? If he is Syrio, then why would Syrio have made a pit stop in KL to teach Arya sword fighting if he had been assigned to the Citadel for something? FM are hired assassins. But Jaqen wanted a key. Why bother with a key when he could just kill his target? What do you suppose the key is for?
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.” ― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
The key could provide access to vaults and rooms within the Citadel which could contain knowledge. Maybe on how to kills dragons! or you know just a few books on how to walk around with a massive chain around your neck!
Crackpot: Could I interest anyone else in the idea that Jaqen H'gar may in fact actually be Rhaegar Targaryan? I read a theory about this on the W and it kinda made sense. Most of it was based on parallels to other works of fiction, but I did have a few in universe connections that built on the idea. For instance, if Rhaegar came to believe that he was tPtwP or more likely, felt that one of his children were, wouldn't he more than likely do everything he could to survive, including giving up the political life of crown Prince? Might not he see fulfilling this role or being around to help his child/children of the utmost importance? It is already rumored that BR received training in glamours from the Faceless Men, so that provides a link between the Targaryans and the FM. It was already established that Rhaegar was in contact with Maester Aemon at the wall. Might it be possible that BR was also a part of the loop? Jaqen shows a fair amount of interest in Arya. Considering she supposedly looks so much like Lyanna would this really be surprising if he were Rhaegar? Now he's possibility at the Citadel, speculated to be searching for a book on dragon lore. Interesting pass-time for a Targaryan, huh? Also, not too bad of a parallel if Lyanna is still existing somewhere below the ground hooked up to weirwood life support. They are both there, ready to guide tPtwP, assisting them to fulfill their duties... I think that at the very least it helps to explain Jaqen's unusual connection to Arya. Any takers???

Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?

Wasn't on here when this was proposed, but yes, anything is of interest compared to the dead in the water series. First Jaqen H'gar a Lorathi. History of Lorath is interesting, particularly the followers of Boash, the blind god. The priests wore hoods with no eye holes because they believed that in darkness the third eye would open. Sound familiar ? The sect came from Valyria Ca. 1424 BC. This is all from TWoIaF. It predates the House of Black and White and Bravos, but the faceless men IIRC originated in Valyria at an undetermined date.
I know I'm on thin ice here, but what the hey. There is no indicated useful age for the faces so Jaquen could be from any age. Added to that is there are memories connected to the faces. Given the connection between the Iron Bank and HoBaW and lack of their real agenda; the fact that Arya is a warg and has a third eye makes for one large coincidence if in fact it is a coincidence.
I'm not sure about the Rhaegar Lyanna connection, but at this point anything is possible. Ahem, Who was it that said "Don't give George any ideas?"
