Hello, i've been reading a hell lot of stuff in this forum and on lml these last few days. Sometimes switching between tabs on a minute basis and basically having treated myself with a asoiaf-theory-shock-therapy. The most recent question, which looks for the end game is the following.
Who will be the main antagonist in the end?
To me it seems pretty clear that there won't be an other-king in the books like the one in the series. Maybe there will be an avatar of the great other, but i don't think he is an other yet. I think it could be possible that one of the characters, that started out "good" will become the antagonist. In a similar fashion to how jamie got from "bad" to "good"
I thought that maybe Jon, Dany and Tyrion might be the PTWP but I also think it would be unlike GRRM to give us three valiant heroes that team up like the power rangers...
So who's the baddie. Especially from those three. What do you think? I throw in Benjen Stark as well for good measure - that guy is fishy.

Interesting--why do you see Benjen as fishy?
All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. Oscar Wilde.
I think Dany and Tyrion are the overt "baddies" (GRRM's even said Tyrion's a villain) but not necessarily the one that will actually end up being the big one. They'll probably fuck up Westoros, but that's about it.
If I had to pick, probably Jon. He's spent the whole series straying from his oaths before finally fully abandoning them, he's quick to anger, too prideful for his own good and wants to matter too much, etc. And I mean he's always been presented as the hero of the story, but the cracks have always been there that Jon isn't as "good" as we're supposed to think. "Lord Snow" has always been Jon's real character IMO.
Your lordship lost a son at the Red Wedding. I lost four upon the Blackwater. And why? Because the Lannisters stole the throne. Go to King’s Landing and look on Tommen with your own eyes, if you doubt me. A blind man could see it. What does Stannis offer you? Vengeance. Vengeance for my sons and yours, for your husbands and your fathers and your brothers. Vengeance for your murdered lord, your murdered king, your butchered princes. Vengeance!

A Storm of Swords - Bran IV
As the sun began to set the shadows of the towers lengthened and the wind blew harder, sending gusts of dry dead leaves rattling through the yards. The gathering gloom put Bran in mind of another of Old Nan's stories, the tale of Night's King. He had been the thirteenth man to lead the Night's Watch, she said; a warrior who knew no fear. "And that was the fault in him," she would add, "for all men must know fear." A woman was his downfall; a woman glimpsed from atop the Wall, with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars. Fearing nothing, he chased her and caught her and loved her, though her skin was cold as ice, and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well.
He brought her back to the Nightfort and proclaimed her a queen and himself her king, and with strange sorceries he bound his Sworn Brothers to his will. For thirteen years they had ruled, Night's King and his corpse queen, till finally the Stark of Winterfell and Joramun of the wildlings had joined to free the Watch from bondage. After his fall, when it was found he had been sacrificing to the Others, all records of Night's King had been destroyed, his very name forbidden.

"Some say he was a Bolton," Old Nan would always end. "Some say a Magnar out of Skagos, some say Umber, Flint, or Norrey. Some would have you think he was a Woodfoot, from them who ruled Bear Island before the ironmen came. He never was. He was a Stark, the brother of the man who brought him down." She always pinched Bran on the nose then, he would never forget it. "He was a Stark of Winterfell, and who can say? Mayhaps his name was Brandon. Mayhaps he slept in this very bed in this very room."
No, Bran thought, but he walked in this castle, where we'll sleep tonight. He did not like that notion very much at all. Night's King was only a man by light of day, Old Nan would always say, but the night was his to rule. And it's getting dark.

Agreed again. I know it's not your cup of tea exactly, but that's what I was trying to get at in my Weirwood Ghost thread. Jon absorbs the ills, is poison, the lordly outcast, and is both the bane and absolution of the people.
"I can see it. You have more of the north in you than your brothers."
I don't know if baddie is the term i would use. There will be aligned interests that think they are doing the right thing and then they'll be the common people getting screwed.Overall i think it all matters on the view.
Some will think Dany is the baddie because when she lands a whole lot of people are going to die. Some will think Jon.The peasents will peobably think the ruling class.Others will think the army of the dead and who they think are responsible for them.
If i had to pick a baddie based on the above i'm going agree with Voice and say mankind.Anyhow youlook at it,they are at the heart of why everything is fracked up.

I also thought of Dany as "the" baddie, in the sense that she has lots of power while being a "broken man" type with no deep affiliation to anywhere or the inclination to gain one. She also roams in huge geographical quarters, so her influence is somewhat global.
As for the Stark Children (Jon or Bran as the forerunners) or Tyrion specifically, I never thought of them as the baddie candidates, as their influence and motivations are quite local. Since they have a connection to both the land and the people there is less of a "anything goes" mentality to achieve their goals.

the power rangers?
I always see Tyrion as the ultimate survivor, has been since day 0 of his life, is very widely traveled, very knowledgeable. Whether he hangs around with Dany long enough to curb her dragon side is open to speculation. I can see him eventually using his talents and 'fixing the broken drains and cisterns' of a post war westeros.
The schemers and dealers are the baddies IMO. Those who ignore the big picture for their own interest, as Martin said in that recently posted interview. Some, only some, of mankind.

The fact that we have a handful of human characters who are straight up rotten to the core, as well as literally zero purely good human characters, is a pretty good indicator that voice and wolfmaid7 are right. We'll leave non-humans off the protagonist-antagonist spectrum since we haven't been given enough info to really understand what motivates them beyond survival.
ETA: I'll go ahead and say that the answer to the question of the main protagonist is also "mankind," and that this knowledge is given its voice through the Faith of the Seven.

"No true knight would condone such wanton butchery." "True knights see worse every time they ride to war, wench," said Jaime. "And do worse, yes." Brienne turned the rudder toward the shore. "I'll leave no innocents to be food for crows." "A heartless wench. Crows need to eat as well. Stay to the river and leave the dead alone, woman."
I have always been of the opinion that there is more to the Others than meets the eye, they are more than mindless evil zombie makers. Also I see Dany heading down a more villainous path, after all dragons plant no trees. Overall I am not sure if there will be one just one villain.
For me I can help but think of the Fire and Ice poem. Both Ice and Fire are forces that can destroy the world in order to save the world we need a balance of these forces. If either get too strong they could destroy the world.
voice, hard not to agree with that from the world we have seen. Humanity has basically (almost) wiped out all the other races on Planetos.
markg171, an interesting take on Jon. I guess I can see it but I have always figured is that he is the one who will help bring peace between humanity and the White Walkers. Then again maybe he is the next Night's King...
Also no one mentioned Bran's cannibalism and mind control. Could see him heading down a dark path if Meera gets killed. Also I really don't trust the COTF either.
Darkstar will be the next Vulture King.
Craster has 19 daughters and there are 19 castles on the Wall, coincidence I think not!

I think Jon is destined to always be viewed as a traitor. He will certainly do things that will look treasonous i believe.

Probably true then again look at the tales that are already spreading about Dany. I think Jon will head down South near the end to re enact Cregan Starks Hour of the Wolf then head back North where he belongs. I don't see him or Dany ruling in the end.
Darkstar will be the next Vulture King.

Martin: I've got to admit I kind of like Tyrion Lannister. He's the villain of course, but hey, there's nothing like a good villain.
Yup Tyrion is a villain never forget. Good thing he will soon have Dany and her three dragons to get revenge on all those who wronged him in Westeros. Wait..... that's not good. Also yes Dany will be a villain before the end.

So Tyrion is a good villain, and we need some of them to balance the bad do-gooders. Having got revenge for his beloved Tysha, he can move on to addressing the challenges that matter, he knows both the Wall and the dragons. Not many do.
Sometimes i think he represents carpe diem in the story.

Nah, I think Tyrion will be a baddie baddie. He's George's classic study in villainy. He's bitter and hateful, he killed his father and has essentially become his father, who is himself a totally evil asshat.
