The intent of this thread is to be an info dump for anything interesting y'all might find on the types of animals who figure prominently in A Song of Ice and Fire. Ecological balance is a prominent theme in this story, so I'm hoping this will help us gain some insight into how everyone fits into GRRM's big picture.

Please feel free to use any source of information you like, whether it be ASOIAF itself, Martin's other works, scientific data on the real animals themselves. Post anything that catches your eye, even if you have no idea how it might be relevant to the story. Worst case scenario, we end up learning a bunch of weird and cool stuff about animals. Fire away!

I'll go first.

From the Wikipedia entry for "Common raven":

"Young birds may travel in flocks but later mate for life, with each mated pair defending a territory."

Also,

"The common raven evolved in the Old World and crossed the Bering land bridge into North America. Recent genetic studies, which examined the DNA of common ravens from across the world, have determined that the birds fall into at least two clades: a California clade, found only in the southwestern United States, and a Holarctic clade, found across the rest of the Northern Hemisphere. Birds from both clades look alike, but the groups are genetically distinct and began to diverge about two million years ago."

Also,

"One explanation for these genetic findings is that common ravens settled in California at least two million years ago and became separated from their relatives in Europe and Asia during an ice age."

Also,

"With large-bodied carrion, which they are not equipped to tear through as well as birds such as hook-billed vultures, they must wait for the prey to be torn open by another predator or flayed by other means."

even a species of lemur—a creature known from the Summer Isles and Sothoryos, but otherwise rarely seen farther north. These lemurs are said to have silver-white fur and purple eyes, and are sometimes called Little Valyrians.
