Ya know who else might at least taking a ride on that same boat? Bran...
he gave corn to the raven, right?
"Arya did not dare take a bath, even though she smelled as bad as Yoren by now, all sour and stinky. Some of the creatures living in her clothes had come all the way from Flea Bottom with her; it didn’t seem right to drown them."
Stannis, described as like "cast iron", being involved with magic. It's a pun of sorts, or a telegraph if you prefer. Iron repels magic, but he looks to it for strength. Iron is eaten away by the sea, yet that is his seat.
are you saying Stannis is 'rusting away?'
he is certainly described that way!

He is, right? And he's rusting like cast iron, too. Getting full of holes: his marriage vows, his love for his daughter (in the show only to this point).

I really really hope Shireen's fate remains a show-only decision. I've grown to love Stannis more and more with each read-through of these books.
"No true knight would condone such wanton butchery." "True knights see worse every time they ride to war, wench," said Jaime. "And do worse, yes." Brienne turned the rudder toward the shore. "I'll leave no innocents to be food for crows." "A heartless wench. Crows need to eat as well. Stay to the river and leave the dead alone, woman."

somehow i only see one option for Stannis (aside from a 'terminal' case of death): the next LC of the Night's Watch, were his crimes can be forgotten and his military talents utilised in the war against whoever.
Besides, why else would Martin Snow have given him the Nightfort?

I'm entertaining the idea of Mel using him for another shadow baby despite his "fire being low". His shade would then join the others that haunt the Night Fort.
The blade was Valyrian steel, spell-forged and dark as smoke. Nothing held an edge like Valyrian steel.
It's a phenomenon we've seen many times; the people who have nothing left to sell but their souls are the ones who fully embrace the unnatural. Off the top of my head, this seems to fit Melisandre, Arya, the Brotherhood without Banners, and the Faceless Men, particularly the story of the first Faceless Man.
For some reason, it hadn't occurred to me that Melisandre and Arya may be on the same journey. But both have given themselves to death.
There is an interesting distinction among them: Melisandre (and the Faceless Men) will kill freely as it serves their goals. Burning innocents is acceptable if necessary. Arya (and the BwoB) kill those who deserve killing. (There is the curious exception of tricking a girl to her death). But this distinction may have little meaning. ASOIAF makes it very clear that identifying those who deserve death is a matter of perspective.
I think Mel wants to matter. She wants to believe she's done something more,is something more than Melony Lot 5.She believes in her ability to do what none in her order has done.Under these circumstances there's no room for to believe "she" could err.Humility won't be a factor or a guide for her when she discerns.
This makes for a problematic pot because we have seen she is willing to stack the deck.Mix that in with a bit of fanaticism and we have Mel.
