More interesting if I could flesh it out a bit. I've been gnawing at this since my second read, but whenever I try to develop it into an actual theory, I find that I can't piece together anything that feels at all satisfying

I have about 5 things in my head like that. I find just putting all the relevant quotes in a word doc helps. I have some that are several years old. LOL!
The blade was Valyrian steel, spell-forged and dark as smoke. Nothing held an edge like Valyrian steel.
DarkSister1001, I watched the scene again this weekend on repeat! Totally says "... he'll never know anything" which is why Jon Snuh knows nothing.
I didn't remember she actually says something important to Ned to be honest ("that Robert will kill him"), because last year I was too concentrated to listen to a name and then.. well, then I forgot.
I think the little thing that's not so little about the statues he made for her and Brandon will turn out to be bigger things than I imagined initially, because he did that for a reason. I'm not sure what that is yet. I know there was a discussion about those statues that should not have been built because statues were supposed to be made only for the lords of WF or kings (in the North). We'll read soon enough I suppose. Fingers crossed.
“Don’t fight in the North, or the South. Fight every battle everywhere. Always, in your mind.”

I think Lyanna's is to conceal proof of her marriage to Rhaegar (harp, wedding cloak) and Brandon's bc it would have looked strange if he didn't have one. I am open to all possibilities and look forward to reading about it.

Are you me?! Sort of. I didn't think of the marriage proof inside the statue or at the base of it, but still...
I had for a long time this sneaky idea that kept popping up: what if Ly is a queen, a bona-fide, valid-marriage-certificate queen of the Seven Kingdoms?! Surely, THAT would make Ned build her a crypt statue, no? It wouldn't be a random act anymore.
Still, Brandon was never Lord since he died alongside his father in KL. Perhaps you're right though. That Brandon statue is a cover for the marriage cover!

I'm in your head! Lol
J is a legitimate Targaryen. Rhaegar died before Aerys so Lyanna wouldn't have been queen. Jon being Rhaegars son would mean his claim is stronger than Danys. Robb naming him heir already gives him half the kindgom and the Riverlands. IMO the Vale would likely follow him too.
In the story of Bael there's a musciain, blue winter roses, a "stolen" daughter of WF, secrets hidden in the crypts and a son. The Stark daughter loved her "abductor". Lots of interesting parallels to Jon et al. It's also telling that we get this story through Jons POV.
It seems to me that either Rickard died after Brandon or at the same time. You're right Brandon wouldn't have been Lord, so no statue.

I'm torn on the promise. I could see her asking Ned to promise her that he would tell the baby about his parentage and promising not to tell him for his own protection.

- you won't tell Robert about his son - you will raise Jon to be a better man than Robert - you will dishonor your wife and yourself in the eyes of the gods by keeping this lie to yourself (you cannot lie before the gods they always know - Jon or Bran not sure which)
Maybe one or more of the following: Promise me ... you will go to the Tower of Joy Promise me ... you will meet the KG Promise me ... Ice will meet Dawn Promise me ... the TOJ will fall Promise me ... you will carry Dawn to Starfall
Maybe when "they" found him and Howland took his hand from Lyanna's, "they" were the companions that went with him to the TOJ
Trying to put some iron in the promise since there was in Lyanna:
"Promise me... Avenge Rhaegar, Kill the usurper" "Promise me... Help my child to claim the throne" "Promise me... that I will not become Robert's wife (if she still had hope about living)"
Also, she did not in childbirth, she slit her wrists because she thought it was Robert that was coming to claim her instead of Ned
"Promise me... do not bring a healer to save my life"
Or maybe it was just that :
"Promise me... fuck me so I don't die a virgin" "Promise me... delete my browser history"
Also, she did not in childbirth, she slit her wrists because she thought it was Robert that was coming to claim her instead of Ned
Ouch. I think you're right that we shouldn't expect something sweet or simple like "take care of my son" although I am open to 'take care of my daughter.' I rather think the brutality of your first choice may fit Lyanna well, although I don't think it fits Ned's thoughts very well.
