What possible promise did Lyanna request of Ned? Nothing is off the table. Let's have some fun with the possibilities!
Promise me...you'll take care of my child. Promise me...you'll bury me in the crypts. Promise me...you'll tell him about his parents. Promise me...you'll NEVER tell him about his parents. Promise me...I'll never have to hear that gd harp again! Promise me...you'll follow your heart and marry Ashara. Promise me...???
Those are just off the top of my head.
The blade was Valyrian steel, spell-forged and dark as smoke. Nothing held an edge like Valyrian steel.
and you will never tell anyone about the child's parents...
"Arya did not dare take a bath, even though she smelled as bad as Yoren by now, all sour and stinky. Some of the creatures living in her clothes had come all the way from Flea Bottom with her; it didn’t seem right to drown them."
This was my first impression. After considering what Ned told Robert about putting her in the crypts.
"She should be on a hill somewhere, under a fruit tree, with the sun and clouds above her and the rain to wash her clean." "I was with her when she died," Ned reminded the king. "She wanted to come home, to rest beside Brandon and Father." He could hear her still at times. Promise me, she had cried, in a room that smelled of blood and roses. Promise me, Ned. The fever had taken her strength and her voice had been faint as a whisper, but when he gave her his word, the fear had gone out of his sister's eyes. Ned remembered the way she had smiled then, how tightly her fingers had clutched his as she gave up her hold on life, the rose petals spilling from her palm, dead and black. After that he remembered nothing. They had found him still holding her body, silent with grief. The little crannogman, Howland Reed, had taken her hand from his. Ned could recall none of it. "I bring her flowers when I can," he said. "Lyanna was … fond of flowers."

I think that one was never in doubt. Well, actually not 'my statue' but 'my bones'.
Did he actually promise anything else?

= I'm suspecting something bigger. That she, and maybe Brandon, and probably Rickard, and probably Benjen, did had something to do with the return of winter and the Others. That Aerys had a good reason for burning Rickard in his armor and maybe even for his method of killing Brandon. That Benjen went to the Wall because his actions called for death. That "and now it begins" refers to the new age that is coming, and "now it ends" is the sadness over all the things that must end to make way for the new beginning. And, yes, I suspect that Ned killed the she wolf.

Yeah, he told Robert that she wanted her bones there. But there has to be a reason why her statue is there, a reason strong enough to make Ned break with tradition, or a reason why it was consistent with tradition. In some way, Lyanna made herself like all of those Lords. I wonder if her statue has a sword across the lap.

I like it! Very interesting.

To be clear, bc of that passage I never questioned what "promise me" could mean.
Doesn't seem like he paid much of a price to keep the promise, if it was just that her bones rest in the crypts of Winterfell. It may be that, but must be more as well.
