All right since I'm going to be busy with a bunch of overnighters for Tuesday - Thursday, I'm just going to start a few hours early.
What I really love about the opening shot of the first episode is the costuming. The costumes of Will, Gared, and Waymar perfectly capture the diachotomy between class and power between the three of them. Waymar has a nice fancy nice looking black fur cloak that he has slightly exposed to show how fancy, wealthy, and powerful the family he's from is. Gared is in well-worn but functional clothes, and Will looks like he's completely in tattered mis-matched clothing.

One thing I don't like about this first episode is how it makes you feel like you take five steps from the Wall and BAM White Walkers are there. They could have had a few more shots conveying how they had been traveling North for a while for this sequence, to really convey just how far North they'd gone. Because as it stands it looks like White Walkers are on the doorstep of the Wall already.

I also have to commend them for choose a Lord Royce in Season 4 who definitely looks and acts like he could be the father to this hoity toity Waymar. And the actor likely did his homework to see how his son acted to help inform his performance I'd likely wager.

I miss having Waymar rise from the dead to kill Will, there was just something perfect about that that conveyed the Others' power and how they didn't have to do much at all and interacting with humans was just child's play to them. Also these Others appear almost tribal compared to Others we meet later.

Just hiding behind the trees.
Darkstar will be the next Vulture King.
Craster has 19 daughters and there are 19 castles on the Wall, coincidence I think not!

I love how Cersei gives Catelyn the expected compliment to Sansa's beauty with a kind of bored perfunctory response. Really great acting choice from Lena.

Why is it that Joffrey looks like he's not wearing a tunic or a shirt underneath that leather? That's just madness. The warning signs of him being crazed were all there, Sansa... the warning signs were all there.
