I was doing a bit of research for something else, and I noticed the following exchange:
Ned regarded him coldly. "Robert is not dead yet. The gods may spare him. If not, I shall convene the council to hear his final words and consider the matter of the succession, but I will not dishonor his last hours on earth by shedding blood in his halls and dragging frightened children from their beds."
Lord Renly took a step back, taut as a bowstring. "Every moment you delay gives Cersei another moment to prepare. By the time Robert dies, it may be too late … for both of us."
The bolded part got me thinking of a theory I had seen a while back but didn't give much thought to: could Renly have been Robert's son?
I took a look at their respective ages, and it could be possible: Renly was born in 277 AC, Robert in 262 AC. He was 15 years old, which is more than old enough. It's also not that uncommon for grandparents to assume the role of parents, publicly, when a young child has a child of their own, somewhat scandalously.
Could that have been why Renly was so eager to crown himself king?
Interesting... But why wouldn't he have mentioned that to anyone. You'd think that Stannis would know that too, then, wouldn't he? He would have been old enough to know if his mother was pregnant. I don't see why it would have been hidden from him. Unless, of course, he did know and just didn't care. Puts Stannis in a whole new light, doesn't it?
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?

That is a big flaw in the theory: either a) they all knew and hid it, or b) it wasn't known to anyone but Robert and his parents.
a) This is a possibility, we don't get POV's for any of the Baratheons, and Stannis would consider himself heir over a bastard son b) This would require the majority of the household being away from Cassana Estermont during the pregnancy. It would only have to be for the last few months.
Not a lot of evidence for it, but Renly's actions are pretty strange.
Yes they do. I agree. Plus, I think that there's a pretty decent age gap between Stannis and Renly, yet Robert and Stannis are relatively quite close in age. I'm sure that's not unheard of, but it could raise eyebrows a bit...
