Nice! If you don't mind, I'll keep this in a side dish for my simmering pot on Jon's abilities! I recently came over something tinfoil-worthy, but it's far from ready for discussion at this point.
I had never read that passage in that way before, but now something about it seems odd. The non-reaction from Jon compared with the hints about the skin-changed animals of both Jon's and Varamyr's. This will sound odd but Jon's lack of a reaction here reminds me of Eddard's non-reaction to the woman's head found in the rainbow pool at Baelor's Sept (and I do have some odd feeling that Ned knows more about that than he let's on).
Haha, you did fear you were going into pro-rlj territory here, so I'll just make it that much wore! Be wary of twisting knickers!
I am not sure it's a true fear, but wary is probably a very good descriptor!
Seventeen and new to knighthood, Rhaegar Targaryen had worn black plate over golden ringmail when he cantered onto the lists. Long streamers of red and gold and orange silk had floated behind his helm, like flames. Two of her uncles fell before his lance, along with a dozen of her father's finest jousters, the flower of the west. By night the prince played his silver harp and made her weep. When she had been presented to him, Cersei had almost drowned in the depths of his sad purple eyes. He has been wounded, she recalled thinking, but I will mend his hurt when we are wed. Next to Rhaegar, even her beautiful Jaime had seemed no more than a callow boy. The prince is going to be my husband, she had thought, giddy with excitement, and when the old king dies I'll be the queen. Her aunt had confided that truth to her before the tourney. "You must be especially beautiful," Lady Genna told her, fussing with her dress, "for at the final feast it shall be announced that you and Prince Rhaegar are betrothed."

I guess rlj is confirmed after all!
And not only that!
Viserion launched himself from the ceiling, pale leather wings unfolding, spreading wide. The broken chain dangling from his neck swung wildly. His flame lit the pit, pale gold shot through with red and orange, and the stale air exploded in a cloud of hot ash and sulfur as the white wings beat and beat again.
The Dragontamer
White wings to go with that white wolf, and a broken chain!?! Oh, wow! And as Viserion's fire is the same colors, Jon will ride him for sure!
But wait... Another option reveals itself...
At mid-morning on the third day Ghost Hill loomed up before them, its chalk-white walls shining against the deep blue of the Sea of Dorne. From the square towers at the castle's corners flew the banners of House Toland; a green dragon biting its own tail, upon a golden field. The sun-and-spear of House Martell streamed atop the great central keep, gold and red and orange, defiant.

*Ominous music playing in the background*
"I remember," echoed Areo Hotah in his deep voice. "The bears danced and the bells rang, and the prince wore red and gold and orange. My lady asked me who it was who shone so bright."
The Princess in the Tower
dlj...? I have read some pointing to Jon described as "dark" as pointing to him being half Dornish, but not half Martell!
But do we have the right Martell...?
The Dornish leader forked a stallion black as sin with a mane and tail the color of fire. He sat his saddle as if he'd been born there, tall, slim, graceful. A cloak of pale red silk fluttered from his shoulders, and his shirt was armored with overlapping rows of copper disks that glittered like a thousand bright new pennies as he rode. His high gilded helm displayed a copper sun on its brow, and the round shield slung behind him bore the sun-and-spear of House Martell on its polished metal surface.
A Martell sun, but ten years too young, Tyrion thought as he reined up, too fit as well, and far too fierce. He knew what he must deal with by then. How many Dornishmen does it take to start a war? he asked himself. Only one. Yet he had no choice but to smile. "Well met, my lords. We had word of your approach, and His Grace King Joffrey bid me ride out to welcome you in his name. My lord father the King's Hand sends his greetings as well." He feigned an amiable confusion. "Which of you is Prince Doran?"

The dais still stood beneath the empty Iron Throne, though all but one table had been removed. Behind it sat stout Lord Mace Tyrell in a gold mantle over green, and slender Prince Oberyn Martell in flowing robes of striped orange, yellow, and scarlet. Lord Tywin Lannister sat between them. Perhaps there's hope for me yet. The Dornishman and the Highgardener despised each other. If I can find a way to use that . . .
Tyrion IX, Storm
Tyrion had his own doubts, now that they stood on the brink. When he looked at Prince Oberyn, he found himself wishing he had Bronn defending him . . . or even better, Jaime. The Red Viper was lightly armored; greaves, vambraces, gorget, spaulder, steel codpiece. Elsewise Oberyn was clad in supple leather and flowing silks. Over his byrnie he wore his scales of gleaming copper, but mail and scale together would not give him a quarter the protection of Gregor's heavy plate. With its visor removed, the prince's helm was effectively no better than a half-helm, lacking even a nasal. His round steel shield was brightly polished, and showed the sun-and-spear in red gold, yellow gold, white gold, and copper.
Tyrion X, Storm
"No one speaks of it, but yes. Ravens flew and riders rode, with what secret messages I never knew. Jon Arryn sailed to Sunspear to return Prince Lewyn's bones, sat down with Prince Doran, and ended all the talk of war. But Robert never went to Dorne thereafter, and Prince Oberyn seldom left it."
Tyrion VI, Storm
"NO!" Jaime had heard all that he could stand. No, more than he could stand. He was sick of it, sick of lords and lies, sick of his father, his sister, sick of the whole bloody business. "No. No. No. No. No. How many times must I say no before you'll hear it? Oberyn Martell? The man's infamous, and not just for poisoning his sword. He has more bastards than Robert, and beds with boys as well. And if you think for one misbegotten moment that I would wed Joffrey's widow . . ."

Wow!
Nice look at these colors. It does make me wonder about categorizing the color combinations. Red, gold, orange vs red, yellow, orange. And then there is the odd use of scarlet which, as we have discussed before) could be a nod to Bloodraven.
I do think the colors are very important, but I wonder how regimented that GRRM is in use. Gold vs Yellow! Does the distinction matter or not? Is red different in perceived imagery than scarlet or crimson?
The color's of House Martell do glimmer here a bit. And there is certainly theories I have come across that Jon could be Oberyn's bastard. I have never paid much heed to them, but it's possible. It just seems like he is too young for that role, but he was getting frisky at a young age. We also have his uncle Lewyn as part of the kingsguard who could have had access to Lyanna, and Lewyn was noted to have a paramour. I think Doran is specifically associated with dressing in the color of his house when he first met his wife as you point out, and I suppose he could be an option, but in my head I have a heard time imagining him with anything but swollen gouty legs and who wants to climb on that?
I wonder if Jon can ride two dragons, Drogon, who seems to fit Jon's personal color scheme, and Viserion, who would fit Jon's obvious baby-daddy color scheme. Like a trick rider, he can have a foot on each dragon's back, gliding through the sky blasting eagles from the Heaven's and melting Lannister's hiding in Casterly Rock!
On a more serious note, it is Viserion with this color scheme, and it was supposedly Quentyn Martell (with the family colors of red, gold and orange) who tried to bond with the "white" but he's really pale cream, perhaps like the sand's of Dorne???? dragon! I still think we are missing some very important information about Quentyn and what really happened in Meereen!
Holy FOOOOK! Perhaps Jon is Quentyn and Quentyn is Jon! Perhaps we have cracked the code!
Haha, do we ever see them? I certainly didn't see this little hole to the side of yours...
Those rabbit's are just plain dangerous!
To be exact, I'm curious about their son Baelor. How he compares to the other two Baelors we have.
Their dragons are interesting too, but then I find dragons interesting.
I don't think they have a son named Baelor. They have a Baelon! The two children of J&A I am most interested in so far are Baelon and Gael. The two noted as having nicknames of "the spring prince" and "the winter child" in the world book. GRRM is drawing our attention to them on purpose. I personally think it has to do with Bael the Bard. I have quite a bit of interest in Baelor the Blessed but not really any in Baelor Breakspear (is that who you are referring too?) but that is because I have not read Dunk and Egg and so he is barely on my radar. If I ever get around to reading those books, I am sure I will have a different perception of him, but right now, it's mostly just a name I recognize with no details to associate with him except for death.
We have no indication dragons are nocturnal anywhere. Dany notes Drogon hunts during the day and returns to his Dragonstone every nightfall.
No, not dragon's, so far anyways. But this idea of flying animals at night reminds be of the supposed giant bat's that flew out from Harrenhal under the orders of Mad Danelle Lothston. Were they really bats? She is interesting for several reason, one of them is this, and another is that she is known for black armor, and another person noted several times in the text for black armor is Rhaegar. And I have some tinfoil on Rickard Stark's armor after it turned cherry red from the heat/flames of wild fire!
With all this gold armor and white armor we have been talking about and now my thinking about the black armor, I am wondering if we should start a thread on armor, it's color, and what it could mean?
Oooooo, did I just drop a gauntlet? Well, let me drop another for ya!
Who is Paul? I fear I am missing something! Perhaps I need an updated copy?
