I am going with alive. Martin could have easily killed him in front of Arya and he didn't. Until a POV sees the corpse he could easily be alive. Or he is a Faceless Man.
Wraith, I think I need to introduce you to my friends karsa & Atreyu. You clearly have too much hope in your heart.

LOL. It's more like he is Schrodinger's Syrio since he could technically be both death and alive. Still until we see the corpse we don't know. Then again we saw the corpses of Bran and Rickon.
Granted I don't expect Syrio to pop out and save Arya in the later novels but there isn't proof he is dead so he is alive until provent otherwise... even though he is probably dead.
Darkstar will be the next Vulture King.
Craster has 19 daughters and there are 19 castles on the Wall, coincidence I think not!

Is he hiding in a box somewhere with the Sealord's cat?
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?

Yes. Also Blue, the Sealord's pet Velociraptor is hanging with them as well.

I am changing my headline to Shrondinger's Syrio. That was hilarious.

if he is dead, the corpse will be too far gone for a sighting.
"Arya did not dare take a bath, even though she smelled as bad as Yoren by now, all sour and stinky. Some of the creatures living in her clothes had come all the way from Flea Bottom with her; it didn’t seem right to drown them."
At the outset of the series, one of the things that attracted me most was that some characters just, ya know, fucking died. No fanfare. No epic death scene. They were just gone. Then the resurrections started happening, and suddenly you can't take it on faith that folks like Quentyn, Benjen and Syrio are dead. It's bullshit.
As soon as the cameras are off I am going to fuck that little dog.

THANK YOU!

How dare you suggest that Uncle Benjen might be dead. In order to save your soul and pay for your sins, I suggest that you go IMMEDIATELY and BUMP for Benjen!

But I thought the books started with a bang resurrection, no? A Game of Thrones prologue deals specifically with that. Will gets down from the tree, looks at the body of the dead Ser Waymar and takes the sword, and seconds later we read about the blue eyed dead man Waymar choking him!
What I mean is we are dropped straight into a world that has magic and resurrection. There are lots of characters who just die afterward, but the intro already told us that this happens, it's not unique and don't take a death for granted. Perhaps you just didn't expect the Red God to have his own resurrections, or that it may happen with characters you came to like or know more in depth, but Martin didn't just sprung UnCat on us. Not really.
There's also the fact that if Syrio or Benjen or Quentyn are no longer appearing again in the series, they are as good as dead. I think it no longer matters if they really are alive or not. For all intents and purposes, their disappearance is a poetic death: just gone as you said above. As far as I can see Martin has balanced the resurrection / revival rate pretty well. Nothing bullshitty about it.

it may appear that way. One of the things martin does is hide his characters too. Syrio is a case in point, assuming he is a faceless man, he can change identity.
As far as Benjen, after you have bumped for him, you can learn about his whereabouts by reading the inquest into his disappearance

wasn't Bump Varamyr's brother?

Syrio is Jaqen Hagar the Lorathi at Harrenhall who uses Syrios' key note phrase "just so" just once; GRRM does not do obvious. Assumption not supported by text: Syrio made a fool out of four gold cloaks and dented Trants armor a tiny bit , now does he get killed for that (quick death is referred to a a mercy in Westeros) or thrown in a black cell?
