Does anyone else think that he might not be a eunuch after all? It's been a little while since I read the last book, but in the scene where Varys and his urchins kill Ser Kevan Lannister I seem to recall GRR Martin writing something to the effect of Ser Kevan noticing that his voice sounded a little bit deeper and he appeared to have what was basically a 5 o'clock shadow. I was thinking maybe the whole eunuch thing has been a disguise Varys has cloaked himself in to seem unthreatening, and he didn't bother with it because he knew he was going to kill Ser Kevan.
Did anybody else catch that or am I imagining things? And if so, I wonder what it would mean Martin has in mind for the character...

I did not notice the deeper voice until you pointed it out. Good catch.
It definitely makes it sound like Varys' tittering, simpering ways are an act to undermine people's ability to take him seriously. The deeper voice sounds like "truth." No reason to lie, at least.
But on the "not a eunuch." The story about the man who cut him. . . I can't find it right now. But it I remember that right, that sounded real. Or are you thinking he was misleading Tyrion by telling him that?
All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. Oscar Wilde.

Varys in his guard disguise is always described as having a bit of stubble on his cheeks. That could be where you're getting the 5 o'clock shadow from.
wellhelloitsdan, I remember us having a drunken convo about this YEARS ago after they finally releases ADWD. At that sportsbar, near Merrifield, remember? LOL! That was a good catch. I remember discussing 'Frey pies', too- I have to get my copy but I don't remember the stubble either, but the lower voice, check.
Here's my question though- why all the detail about the sorcery when he was gelded, and his aversion to magic? Varys, unfortunately, will never have a POV bc he knows too much, but I think he has been planning to put the Targs in power. In my not so humble opinion, Kevan died bc he needed to keep crazy Cersei in charge just a little longer. Kevan was too stable and too good. I mourned his loss, as a matter of fact. But the realm wouldn't support a return of the Targs without craziness ensuing in W. He said 'for the realm', right?
Have no idea if that is relevant to him being a eunuch or not, but I think that's been his plan, and he's been a Targ loyalist. I also think Aegon is real and a fake was killed. Sorry for the tangent. Feel free to mod the OT stuff.

Yes as Rugen I think it was.
wellhelloitsdan, it is certainly possible. I am fairly certain most people in Westeros took him at his word. Eunuchs while rare in Westeros seem fairly common in Essos.
Darkstar will be the next Vulture King.
Craster has 19 daughters and there are 19 castles on the Wall, coincidence I think not!

I do remember that! I still have the picture you took with the server right behind me floating around somewhere, I believe
