I certainly agree, there was no way he could escape alone. They were sending a message to the Night's Watch and Westeros.

The show makes that more explicit, while IIRC in the books, Gared was farther away and not directly interacting with the Others at all. So the difference comes between someone who through their skills and sheer determination managed to survive and flee south--while the other was a message boy.
