With Season 1 Episode 1 I forgot how fast paced it was, but also how much being introduced to the Starks was so much "Meet the Starks", cue "whacky but good-hearted family comedy" beats that really play out throughout their early scenes. It's like HBO is promising the viewers that the Starks are the "whacky comedic family set in Medieval TimesTM". It really isn't until Bran falls that suddenly those competing tones disappear. The added scenes really are there it seems to enrapture the viewers into being enchanted to awarding the Starks the "All Westerosi Family of the Year" award. Compared to that, the austere and solemn, but slightly affectionate book scenes that occur in this episode really stand out in... well, stark contrast. Viewing this for a second time one gets the idea that Winterfell is where the Starks can let their guard down and be "average, normal human beings, just like you viewers at home" while outside of Winterfell they have to actually be their characters--which seems a bit of a shame in this adaptation. I like the scenes--I also like that they otherwise seem naturally inserted into the narrative, but they do seem like a complete tonal contrast from the rest of the show--even the added Jaime/Cersei scene in King's Landing that occurs before "Meet the Starks" seems more believable to be part of the ASOIAF book series than the Stark Family Comedy we've got otherwise.
Still, I have to admit I like the scenes, despite them being very much from the Family Comedy genre.
yeah, there was some unnecessary dialogues to establish the starks, which made it unintentionally funny I guess.
Jon Snow laughing at Bran missing his arrow, when he was just encouraging him a few seconds ago? Ned says like which of you were a marksman at 10. found that strange, then next shot Jon goes right back to giving sincere advice. Seems like Jon's laugh was just to let Ned get a word in.

Yeah that marked me as off as well--I could accept Robb laughing, but Jon when he'd just been giving encouragement? No. Also there's no way that Catelyn would just stand there and look pretty while Arya beats out her son in archery. If anything, seeing that might either prompt Catelyn to scold and chase after Arya herself, or to make a comment that she's skilled with a bow and might see that as permissible.

Ah, I don't know. She did laugh.
I can't say that I found the extra comedy surrounding the Starks out of place. It is a first episode and we are getting to know the characters. Overall, I think the show uses humor much more than the books. Just look at Jaime finding Tyrion by following the moaning.
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?
