It's fascinating to look back at early GOT episodes and really see how the actors are trying to grasp their characters before they've managed to put their own spin into them. It's really in this season that we get to see all of Tyrion's faults and flaws. His waking up in the kennels really hammers home how drunken Tyrion must have been--though his wardrobe and hair are far too good looking to have been sleeping all night in a kennel. Plus why the heck was he sleeping there and then immediately goes into break his fast? He should be covered in mud and dogshit. My parents ran a kennel for their dog show careers--dog shit should be everywhere--it isn't really the place you want to be sleeping, and I'd hope a grown Tyrion, even if he was drunk would recognize that enough, then add that he goes straight in to eating breakfast like that? Aggh! But in any case, despite my hygenic qualms about this (Can I hope the Lannisters got worms from the Winterfell dogs?) addition, I do like the fact that it really paints Tyrion in as messed up a light as possible. Later seasons Dinkledge will add a certain pride to Tyrion that here is completely absent and much more keeping with his character.
