For those who want to look at the death of Theon's bromance with Robb in more detail:
Robb,
I hope this reaches you in time. My father has rejected the offer and plans to attack the North, raiding the shores, and taking Deepwood Motte. Mobilize your army and make for the North before it's too late. I will write again when i can.
I want to ask something to everyone because Theon is given so much grief over this thing. Winterfell was a pipe dream in Balon's head. He imagined it as a prolonged siege and the final battle in taking the north. For Theon, he showed his family what he could do, and won a pretty strong position with least expense of life. This is one of those things like what if Ned would have sat on the throne. Theon holds the north, it would actually be best for most people. If the Iron Born were in any way serious, then Theon's actions were brilliant and as merciful as possible. He is always in a position to make a winning move, by fate, and not by choice. The question I want to ask is, faced between family and friends, would you also burn that letter?

I think that it's one of those questions that doesn't have a simple answer. It's hard to know exactly what you would do until you're in that situation. Honestly, Robb has been more family to Theon than his own family was. It must have been a horrible position to be placed in. I have a best friend that I grew up with that might as well be my sister, but I have no idea if I'd ever be able to choose between her and my parents if it came to it, and hopefully will never have to figure it out. I think that the only time it might be a no brainer is when your own children are involved. Which makes the position that Balon puts Theon in even more horrifying.
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?
