Did anyone else catch that when Luwin's talking to Theon about taking the black he mentions that there are escape tunnels leading away from Winterfell?!?
Really?
He doesn't specifically say tunnels. I think the wording is that there are secret exits or similar that would get him past the troops. What else would these exits be?
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?
I remember that someone had a theory about underground tunnels or rivers connected to the crypts. I think lava tubes, because of the hot springs...plus there would be Obsidian lining them, so safe from incursion by White Walker. Ah, tinfoil hat, you are so fashionable :-D

I believe that WP, among others argued for connecting tunnels all under Westeros. I think that the idea makes a fair amount of sense. We have a lower level of the crypts blocked off. Plus all of the underground passages and river in the cave beyond the wall. Plus it really seems like they're trying to draw attention to the tunnels, etc. on the show. In Blackwater, Tyrion and Varys discussed the underground passages in Kings Landing and later when Tyrion is leading the battle he takes them beyond the gates by leading everyone through a secret passage.
