The show really cuts out what Jon gives as his motivation, which is more pivotal for the rest of his character growth in later books. After he joins the Night's Watch, Jon puts aside any thoughts of Winterfell and being his "father's son". However he gives essentially that reason (being a bastard) to Mance in this scene in the books, and Mance accepts it as genuine--and as his later growth in the books shows, it actually is.
Making Jon a bit more noble by saying he wants to "fight for the side that fights for the living" is a little more generic fantasy stuff and cuts out Jon's future character growth.
