And so another season comes to a close. Overall I thought Season 3 was a great season. You can tell that compared to Season 2 they got a bump in budget that they used to flesh out the world rather well. Also by splitting the book in half you got more time to spend with characters and develop them and the relationships they have with one another--sometimes in good ways and other times in less than good ways. However considering that the bread and butter of this show is the characters and the relationships they have with one another, this was a good change of pace overall.
In terms of an overarching theme, I'd have to say that the stronger focus on relationships allowed for the show to explore the Machiavellian themes better than previous seasons have. To quote our favorite wildling:
"People work with each other when it suits them, they love each other when it suits them, and they kill each other when it suits them."
Essentially espousing a cynical Machiavellian viewpoint that people are self-interested creatures who think about their own skin before they consider others. Beyond our Wildling friend, where else did you guys see this in the rewatch?
