Now don't get me wrong I enjoy Brienne coming in to save the day as the next guy. I was moved by the oath scene and I am glad Sansa is safe, for now.
What bugs me is that at end of last season Brienne made a choice. She had been waiting for most of the season to save Sansa and fulfill her oath. Then Stannis comes along, this forces a choice between revenge and duty. Brienne looks for a long moment and chooses Stannis and revenge. Of course mere moments later the candle is lit and Brienne is gone. Oh noes we viewers are supposed to think.
Now Brienne sneaks past the whole Bolton army and revenge kills Stannis. He even tells her to do her duty, which she clears fails since she felt it was more important to kill Stannis than save Sansa and fulfill her duty. I guess Cat's ghost didn't stand in the way of Brienne's vengence but Sansa's safety was. Jaime and Brienne entire arcs are about oaths and how you can't fulfill them all.
Now Sansa and Theon make their escape alone and are hunted by Bolton men and Brienne manages to evade the entire Bolton Army (again) and saves the day appearing from no where. Yes she saves the day but totally undermines her decision to choose revenge over duty. She gets her cake and eats it too. It just annoys me how Brienne is incapable of failing and magically appearing wherever she is needed. She gets to have her vengence and save Sansa because the writers want her too.
When everyone else suffers due to their mistakes its a little annoying for one character, even one as good as Brienne to be infalliable in this show. So Deus Ex Brienne, the Maid that can't be beat. A theme of the show is choice and how characters choices impact themes and the other characters, to their sorrow or joy. So do I have a point or is this nitpicking? I know D&D don't care about themes but this just bugs me a bit.
