With the most recent episode of GOT there have been lots of discussion in the reviews about dragon riding, do you need Targaryen blood to ride a dragon and of course A+J=T.
I don't think its Targaryen blood but rather you need Valyrian blood in order to bond and ride a dragon. After all the Targaryens were only 1 of 40 dragon riding houses in Old Valyria. They weren't even that powerful of a house if what we know is true.
Lots of people seem to think that you don't need an special blood due to Nettles. Just feed it sheep and be nice and you too can ride a dragon. This is BS and did no one read the World Book? Nettles is a dragonseed. A dragonseed is a bastard from Lord's right to the first night that comes from Valyrian stock (Targaryen, Velaryon etc) So she does have the blood and the sheep is just a smart way to keep your dragon happy.
From the World Book:
SHEEPSTEALER (Nettles): A wild dragon tamed by a dragonseed, vanished at war's end.
From the Princess and the Queen:
But now voices on the black council were raised to question Ser Addam’s loyalty. The dragonseeds Ulf White and Hugh Hammer had gone over to the enemy … but were they the only traitors in their midst? What of Addam of Hull and the girl Nettles? They had been born of bastard stock as well. Could they be trusted?
I am not sure why so many people miss this clearly stated thing. So what do people think? I think you need Valyrian blood to bond and ride a dragon. What does everyone else think?
Darkstar will be the next Vulture King.
Craster has 19 daughters and there are 19 castles on the Wall, coincidence I think not!
I agree with you that the dragon seeds are Targaryen bastards. And we know other houses had dragons. However: The dragon-binding horn tell us that dragons can be captured by magic. We have seen no Valyrons with dragons, or Lyssians. Only Targs. So I think that they alone have blood-binding to these dragons. Perhaps there were other races of dragons that perished with their folk during the doom?

But didn't the Doom kill all of the Valyrian dragons? And we know other houses/families had dragons prior to the Doom, right? That the Targs and their dragons survived only because they'd moved to Dragonstone.
So, seems like it might not take Targ blood per se.
All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. Oscar Wilde.

I think the dragon binding horn is BS. PJ had a good theory that actually controls men for a short while, while is why Euron won the Kingsmoot. Then after the Shield Islands many people started plotting against him despite the victory. Targs were the only dragon riding house to move out of Valyria which is why they were the only one with dragons after the doom.

Like one needs wolf-blood to be a warg?
Well blood of the First Men certainly and maybe a special lineage either related to the Others or the Children. Its hard to say.

Yes, but the Valyron family is Valerian. No Dragon riders. The free-city of Lys breeds silver haired indigo eyed beauties from Valyria. No Dragon riders. If just the blood of old Velyeria was needed, some dragon should have bonded with some person on those islands. It doesn't happen though. So there is something missing. My favorite tinfoil wrapped idea is that the Targaryens and their pets are blood mingled.

Plenty of Velayron's rode dragons in the early years of the Targ dynasty, they even intermarried quite often. House Velayron wasn't a dragon owning house in Old Valyria.

I have to add this thought to my Dragonbonding thread, but something Dany said and a pattern that emerged in TPATQ has me thinking that FM blood was the key.The moment that was introduced with the Targs that made bonding without such things possible. The Skinchaging gene was introduced to them so in the case of some of the Targs like some of the Starks they "became" Dragons. That was the key and the answer to the riddle of the sphinx.
