The ranger gave his horse into the care of one of his men and followed. "You are Jon Snow. You have your father's look."
"Did you know him, my lord?"
The context is that Qhorin met Jon and this is their first exchange of words. Again someone recognized Jon as a Son of Winterfell just by his look "His Fathers Look". Very interesting.

Interesting indeed! Qhorin knew Benjen, right? This might lend some credence to the crackpot
Benjen+Lyanna=Benjen being sent to the Wall, and Jon.
Do we know Quorin's backstory? IE: does he have a "pre-Wall" interest in Starks as a Northerner, or is his interest in and recognition of Starks tied to his Ranging? Picking up ideas North of the Wall and at the Wall?
The fact that a few people Jon runs into North of the Wall recognize and note his Starkness--that can't just be about Jon. Has to be Starkness's importance per se, no?
All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. Oscar Wilde.

Well, Quorin would know Benjen's looks after 16 years or however long it has been. But how would he know what Ned looks like? Maybe through stories that Ben told? Really this question of Starkness goes back to Ned's alleged knowledge deficit of North-lore. Something important seemingly wasn't transmitted to second son Ned?

Ned tells Robert he should go and see the Wall. Which makes it sound like Ned has been to the Wall. Could be he's seen Quorin there, no?
Though that doesn't explain the basic importance of Starks to those beyond the Wall. Or why the Bastard of Winterfell would matter so much . . .

The quote in context:

"Did you know him, my lord?"
"I am no lordling. Only a brother of the Night's Watch. I knew Lord Eddard, yes. And his father before him."
Hey! princeofghost, Where have you been hiding lately? Had to use the for you the other day. Well, not really, but I was the only one online at the time and it made me feel cool!
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?
