Some posters have be referencing other non-ASOIAF-world writings of GRRM to seek clues for motifs etc in ASOIAF. Seems a damned good idea to me, so I got my hands on his whole corpus. Geez, he's written a lot - I've got 32 stories and some in anthologies that he's contributed to or edited.
Just read 'A Song for Lya' - excellent: short, not multi-dimensional so can take it all in in one read, great plot, early exploration of greenseeing.
So, what next? I'm a busy guy so I need you to help me select just a few short stories that bear some relation to ideas developed in ASOIAF.
Several of us have been reading along with prestonjacobs 1000 World video series. There's a thread for it in the video section. Personally, I've really enjoyed the Tuf Voyaging Series so far, but I think there are shared themes in just about everything I have read.
Why must I always be the isle of crazy alone in an ocean of sensibility? The should to everybody else’s shouldn’t? The I-will to their better-nots?
I second Lady Dyanna. Tuf's Voyages are good stories. I know that asoiaf isn't set in the 1000 Worlds, but it ~could~ be an ancient or post-apocalyptic world. Our author really hasn't strayed that far from his own Universe's schema imo.

Cheers. I'm looking for clues in motifs GRRM has previously used, so there's no need for links to his '1000 worlds'.
I've just read the Sandkings to add to A Song for Lya - quite reminiscent of Tales of the Unexpected. Gripping yarns, but not multi-layered like ASOIF as I mentioned.
Any idea what the Wild Cards series is about - looks pulpy to me. Are the ones with 'Kraken' and 'Dragon' in the titles linked to ASOIF? And how about his contributions to New Twilight Zone - worth viewing?

Sandkings and A Song for Lya are both a part of the 1000 worlds universe. I highly recommend prestonjacobs' story order though:
Makes the short stories fit together in a way that makes it feel like a multilayered ASOIAF book.
And really, after going through them, I feel like short stories are grrm's true medium. ASOIAF feels multilayered, imo, because it is basically a bunch of short stories taking place on the same planet.

Right, that's PERFECT for what I'm looking for. I shall go through the list methodically. TBH, I'm a short-story kinda reader; ASOIAF is very much an exception to my rule.
