So, I figured I'd finally reread these, and The Hero is narrated by Roy Dotrice, and warrants most of my 3 star rating. The story itself is rather simple, and obvious, but it's an early one.
This time around Kagen reminded me of Victarion. Grady reminded me of Euron.
Tagging folks interested in the 1000 Worlds! maestercambodia, Lady Dyanna, LmL, whitewolfstark, Maester Sam. I've probably forgotten many others who are interested in this set of short stories, but all are of course invited to come join the conversation.
I'd like to pick these apart in a bit more detail than prestonjacobs' videos do and discuss how the various plotlines present themselves in ASOIAF.
"I can see it. You have more of the north in you than your brothers."
In re-listening to prestonjacobs' review, and his guest's comments on the High Officers all actually being from Earth, while their soldiers are not, I am struck by the fact that this is a lot like the hierarchy that established and maintained the Seven Kingdoms.
The dragonkings are unique, due to their otherworldly Valyrian heritage. This heritage gives them obvious military position as elites, as well as a tradition of conquest and the economic use of vassal kingdom-states (the North, Dorne, Riverlands, etc).
"I can see it. You have more of the north in you than your brothers."
Okay, rather cliched and predictable tbh. But it sets out GRRM's attitude towards war - the 'hero' was, after all, lauded for being a killer in offensive, expansionist missions, like the 'heroes' of the First Men and Andals.
