I've trimmed down this OP to remove a bit of fluff.
A robust writer of great depth and breadth, George Raymond Richard Martin is best known for his prolific Wild Cards series. I will be meeting GRRM at an event soon, and was wondering what a good question might be for him.
My own questions tend to be rather silly, and might even be considered rude. Hard to imagine, I know...
So, alas, I am coming to you for help.
Please write in your suggestions below!
Once we have a nice hefty amount of questions, I'll make a new poll listing the nominees. But first, we have to figure out what category of his work to ask him about. The new poll is listed above.
Question Nominees
The following is a list of (serious) questions that have been suggested in comments. I will add them to a new poll later this week. We'll plan on Saturday April 22, that should give everyone time to post their ideas for questions. Then we'll start the vote for the best question. Categories thus far:
Detractorish Question
GRRM Question Nominees
Stark Question Nominees
7K Question Nominees
Other Question Nominees
Mance Question Nominees
Magic Question Nominees
If I missed any just let me know and I'll add them.

Detractorish Question
- Ask a question that incites a Nerd Riot (many nominees can be found in comments lol)
GRRM Question Nominees
- Are you the Old Man of the River? (DarkSister1001 )
- Is there any chance of releasing WoW & DoS simultaneously? (DarkSister1001 )
- Is there a particular time of the day that you prefer to write? (DarkSister1001 )
- Assuming that HBO’s GoT finishes the series before you finish writing it. How different will the ending between the show and books be? Will they basically be the same ending or has the show deviated far enough from your vision to give us two unique endings? (silentmajority )
Stark Question Nominees
- Were the three shadows at the Trident 1. The Hound 2. Ser Barristan 3. Ser Ilyn? (voice )
- Does Lyanna's statue have a direwolf at her feet, and, did it once have a wooden tourney sword? (danl )
- Will Maege Mormont and Galbert Glover make a return to the story? (SerTarod )
- Why was Bran missing from the royal procession into the WF hall; the one that Jon observed ever so carefully? was it 'just a typo'? (arrysfleas )
- Why Ben Jen? (arrysfleas )
- Are the Starks and Daynes related? (DarkSister1001 )
- Regarding the polar opposites of Jon Snow and Sansa Stark: (cruciaremors )
- How much of Sansa's Alayne Stone persona is influenced by her "half-brother"? She seems to think a bastard girl shouldn't be capable of dancing, a trait that is seen in Jon, for instance. (cruciaremors )
- How will Jon's death affect his perceptions of his remaining family? He obviously feels very deeply for Arya and wants to rescue her from the perceived threat that is Ramsey, but what about the other siblings, Bran, Rickon and Sansa? And what about LSH? What would they think of each other should they meet again? (cruciaremors )
- If Jon and Sansa were to meet again, how would their perception of each other be changed by their recent experiences (Jon as Lord Commander, Sansa as a bastard)? (cruciaremors )
- How much of Sansa's Alayne Stone persona is influenced by her "half-brother"? She seems to think a bastard girl shouldn't be capable of dancing, a trait that is seen in Jon, for instance. (cruciaremors )
7K Question Nominees
- How did Jaqen get in the Black Cells? (DarkSister1001 )
- Did the silent sisters have a more major role than the common man suspects to play in replacing beliefs in the old gods? (puce )
- They all die except Sansa who rules over a dying realm as the plebs starve to death after the ravages of the war, right? (puce )
- Will we ever get Shae's backstory? (DarkSister1001 )
- Was Euron ever contacted by the 3EC? (DarkSister1001 )
- Who would win in a fight, Robert Baratheon or Arthur Dayne? (markg171 )
- Was Lyanna a virgin before she was kidnapped by Rhaegar? Was she one when Ned found her? (markg171 )
- Where does Victarion rank among the current best fighters in Westoros? Or Essos considering he's there? (markg171 )
- Who would win in a fight, Jon or Aegon? (markg171 )
- How old was Arthur when he joined the KG? (markg171 )
- Jaime mentions Barristan neglecting to have written down his victories in his White Book entry, specifically that he could've at least written down "a few tourney victories". Define a few, as it's 15 years worth that Barristan neglected. Where they only jousts or also melees? (markg171 )
- Did Jaime fight in the Greyjoy Rebellion? (markg171 )
- The show has given Jaime Widow's Wail for next season, as evidenced by the recently released promo photos. Any chance of Jaime wielding it in the books? He gave away Oathkeeper because it's size was too awkward for him, but Widow's Wail is slightly smaller as it was forged for Joffrey. (markg171 )
- Robert wanted to enter the melee in AGOT, but was talked out of it because Barristan and Ned pointed out that nobody would try against their king. But how would Robert have actually done in that melee if they had tried and Robert had entered? (markg171 )
Other Question Nominees
- When an Other is killed, does its ice sword melt along with it? (Maester Sam )
- Is it possible for a human to wield an Other sword, and if so, any human or only particular bloodlines? (Maester Sam )
- Can ice swords exist south of the Wall, or do they melt? (Maester Sam )
- Are the Others capable of feeling joy or pleasure? Can they also feel emotional pain? Is someone somewhere grieving for Ser Puddles? (Maester Sam )
- Do the Others have individual names? (Maester Sam )
- Are Craster's son's used in the manufacturing of Others armor and/or weapons? (DarkSister1001 )
Mance Question Nominees
- How old is Mance Rayder? Or, how old was he when he was picked up by the Night's Watch/how long ago was this? (Maester Sam )
- Are there any other examples of wildling children being raised by the Watch? (Maester Sam )
- When did Mance desert the Night's Watch? Was he on the Wall at all while BR was there? (Maester Sam )
- Who taught Mance ("Mance" who wiped the floor with Jon, one of the Watch's best fighters) how to fight (and specifically, with a greatsword)? (Maester Sam )
- Where was Ser Arthur Dayne hiding between the time Ned let him go, and the time he put on Mance's face, following the shadowcat incident that killed the real Mance? (Maester Sam )
- How come Mance showed up in Winterfell not looking like Rattleshirt? Wasn't the ruby supposed to anchor the glamour and his slavery? Did he break Mel's magic? Or was it broken for him by someone or something? (markg171 )
- Mance claimed he needed 6 young and pretty spearwives to save the fake Arya, which Jon agreed to. Mance then provided the names of 5 old/middleaged and ugly/average looking spearwives, and 1 young and pretty spearwife, which Jon did not know about as Mance got Dolorous to get them. Why did Mance lie to Jon, and what did he really need the spearwives for? (markg171 )
- Does Mance Rayder have any children (legitimate or otherwise) besides Dalla's boy? Or (same question really) did Ser Arthur sire any children before his run-in with Ned? (Maester Sam )
- Could you tell us a bit more about how Mance met Dalla? (Maester Sam )
- Who would win in a duel between Mance Rayder and Arthur Dayne? Assuming equal weapons of course. (Maester Sam )
Magic Question Nominees
- Will any more dragons(not Targs) hatch? (DarkSister1001 )
- Mel claims that nobody in her order can interpret visions from R'hllor quite as accurately as she can. In ADWD, that same book where she thinks this, we are introduced to Moqorro and Benerro, who both seem to be extremely strong sorcerers through their displays of magic. Is Mel actually the best, or does she simply think she's the best? (markg171 )
- We are told Craster's blood runs black and he bears a heavy curse. The black blood makes sense, since his father was in the NW. But why the heavy curse? Is it because he is a NW bastard, and so his very existence means someone broke a vow? Or is there more to it than that? (Maester Sam )
- Is there any significance to Val returning to the wall all dressed up in white? there is speculation that this is representative of her magical ability, is this true? (SerTarod )
- Along with the white outfit (and other than it being relatively expensive, as far as money values go beyond the Wall, nothing further is forthcoming in the Books), there a few aspects such as Tormund's arm bracelets with runes written on them, that to some indicate a a magical tradition and practice, is this correct? (SerTarod )
- If there is indeed magical ability/practice and tradition (other than skin changing) in the north, are we going to see more of it in Winds? (SerTarod )
If I missed any just let me know and I'll add them.
