Yeah, I guess a good question to ask is what's up with all the monotone acting all of a sudden?
I think that has to come back to the writing. The strongest moments of the show have typically been adaptations of scenes found in the books. Now that they are charting their own territory, things have been pretty bad. They're not good at following their own precedents and canon, so without any foundation at all to make the storylines make sense, I'm trying to keep my expectations low.
The actors can't do much with these scenes the way they are written, imo. And the directors haven't helped much. Podeswa is meh. Mylod is bad. Cogman and Mylod gave us the last episode. Aside from Missandei's ass, I have no idea what they were thinking with that love scene.
I don't think that it's been too bad to be honest. Some of the dialogue has been clunky, but it's still better than 90% of everything else on TV. Again, blame George for this. No one else. He could have put everything on the back burner and finished this series, but chose not to.

Agreed, on both counts...
Still better than anything else on tv, and I definitely blame George for wilting under HBO's exposure.
I do think HBO could do better if they simply hired better writers with a deep understanding of the source material (see whitewolfstark's and pieceofgosa's rewrites).

I couldn't disagree more, tbh. The Leftovers, Better Call Saul, Twin Peaks, Orphan Black, American Gods, Preacher, Legion, The Handmaid's Tale (that's just off the top of my head), all of these shows are (imo) better written than Thrones is currently. It's a funny irony actually, I feel (as many others do) that GRRM has gotten in over his head with the complexity of the world he created and if Georgie is in over his head, D&D have sunk to the bottom of Blackwater Bay.

With the exception of The Leftovers I would put those other shows in the top 10%. I never said it was the best show period, just that it was still much better than most of everything else on TV. Maybe I just like this show because I am biased and feel like it is likely the only ending we'll ever get out of this story... Of course some are holding out for a World Con announcement.

Great examples, I forgot about The Handmaid's Tale. That was REALLY good. Best collective acting perfomances I've seen since Breaking Bad.
Legion wins my #1 show award for the year. Holy fuck it was awesome.
Better Call Saul is sooo boring to me. Don't get me wrong. I still like it, and I look forward to him actually becoming Saul Goodman, but fuck. Enough montages of email edits already. Vince is overplaying his Breaking Bad cinematographic originality to the point that it is becoming a bad trope.
I'm undecided on American Gods. Parts of it were really cool, but a lot of the time it felt like they were relying upon shock imagery in place of actual plot. For all it's faults, including that same one, I'd still put GoT ahead of American Gods. Although, you said "better written"... and GoT is definitely not better written than American Gods. At this point, GoT is coasting along on its popularity. The writing has gotten steadily worse since season 3, and is now a joke.
I loved the first season of Preacher, but the second was pretty boring imo, until the last episode.

I'm pretty much in the same boat I think. I don't consider HBO's fan fiction to be the same story as ASOIAF, and thus, cannot consider its ending to be anything but the ending to a piece of very expensive fan fiction, but I do still share your sentiment.
It is very likely that D&D will be the only "writers" to ever complete a series with ASOIAF's characters.
I've not yet seen The Leftovers, Twin Peaks, or Orphan Black...
I thought the Leftovers was a snoozer, never was able to get into Preacher or Orphan Black. I am interested in watching the new Twin Peaks though. I would add The Last Kingdom, and Into the Badlands for shows that are better than Game of Thrones.

Didn't realize Twin Peaks was a whole new show... I thought it was a continuation of the Old. I was putting off watching it until I had seen the original, but if that's not necessary (paging pieceofgosa!), I'll jump on in!
Into the Badlands is visually interesting at times, but it's a little over the top for my taste. Characters fight well when the plot wants them to fight well, and forget how to throw a punch when the plot wants them to be captured. It's kinda lame. Then there's the utter disregard for the laws of physics...

I actually wholeheartedly agree with that, however the writing is still objectively better than season 4-6 of Thrones.

I defs should have been more specific in my post but you saw where I was going Peaks is my favourite show on just now (and frankly, of the last 5 years) but Thrones is right behind that (in terms of enjoyment). So yes, I am talking specifically about the writing with the shows I listed.

If you throw the net wide enough. Thrones has better writing than Days of Our Lives or General Hospital but in terms of it being the most expensive TV show in history with some outstanding acting performances and true cinematic production values, the writing just doesn't match up to the rest of the show and as such sticks out like a sore thumb (to me, anyway).

It is a continuation dude, this is basically season three. I would love to tell you to just jump in buddy but you absolutely need to watch the first two seasons and Fire Walk With Me. I've seen every ep and the movie multiple times & I barely understand what's happening in the new season, if you haven't seen the original I can't even imagine what that viewing experience would be like !!!
Ahem...Drogon would do a face plant after tearing all the ligaments in his knees rather than take flight. You just need to suspend disbelief.
Yeah but, "magical creature" kinda trumps all concerns about physics The stuff that is bad, the stuff that annoys me is what voice, said earlier, a disregard for continuity. In a phrase it's "retroactively altering continuity for plot convenience" and this is one of D&D's biggest sins. It tells you who they are writing for, they write for the millions of people who only think about Thrones for the ten weeks it's on each year and that's absolutely fine, I've long since made my peace with that. It doesn't mean they're not insulting peoples intelligence, they just know it's a minority who actually care.

I tried to get into the original Twin Peaks but couldn't stomach it. Kind of sad that it's technically season 3. Still love Into the Badlands. Nothing else on TV like it.
