Makes you wonder if the Old Gods are getting sick of the Southern heathen encroachment on the North. First those fishy Manderelys and now there is a Sept in Winterfell. WINTERFELL the heart of the North. I can imagine this pissing some powers off.
It is a bit odd that there is so many knights in the north, but I also keep in mind that some men could be taking the knightly vows while not really changing theire beliefs (if they have any). Could be they just wanted the title and did what they had to do to get it. All the stories featuring knights should be kept in mind as an influence on young boys and men imo.
We are never told Robert Baratheon is a knight, and when he became made king he earned the ability to knight men, but I wonder that he isn't a knight, as well. We are not told this about Stannis or Renly, either, but I would think at least Renly took a knights vows, if only for the glory of it. I know this doesn't have anything to do with the north, but I don't think knighthood is as cut and dry as it seems. I used to think it was more cut and dry, but now the idea is blurred in my mind.
And perhaps Ned might have earned a knights title in battle, although he never went by it, because he was already Lord of Winterfell. I wonder about Brandon Stark as well, and Rickard. When Jaime remembers Lord Rickard burning, he remembers the gold dripping off of Lord Rickard's spurs. Golden spurs are something that is probably reserved for knight's.
Accepting a knighthood doesn't mean you disavow the old gods at all. It just means you might have had to spend a knight in vigil to the Seven. And, honestly, although the Old God's seem connected to Westeros, and the Faith of the Seven seems to have come to Westeros with the Andal's, the Faith of the Seven might be just as old and powerful as the Old Gods.
Bah its all that Andal Maester revisionism of history. I agree the part about knighthood while being a follower of the Old Gods. Jorah Mormont was knighted and I don't see him following the Faith of the Seven, unless Lynesse demanded it of him. That I could believe.
Again there was some knights in White Harbor that still follow the Old Gods.
We do hear the idea of "the old gods and the new" in the story, thought it seems that the show focuses on it more. Perhaps, people have become used to coexisting with multiple religions, and you pick and chose what you like from each and leave the rest behind. Like a buffet!
