Oh my God, I think I might have just stumbled upon something incredible!
There's been discussion about current Tullys having First Men (possibly Blackwood) blood, I think Lady Evolett suggested it in one of her essays, but I just used to dismiss this idea as having no actual evidence. However, there is something that could be considered evidence - the Tully names.
Why were Hoster and Brynden given those names? The only other Hosters we know about are Hoster Blackwood, son of Lord Tytos Blackwood, and Hoster Frey, grandson of Alyssa Blackwood. The only other Bryndens - Bloodraven and Brynden Blackwood, another son of Lord Tytos.
These two names seem more like traditional Blackwood names, not traditional Tully names, so a Blackwood relative suddenly seems a very likely explanation.
Ooooh yes, this fits rather well! It seems to me that IF the right combination of bloodlines is needed for certain magical abilities, the Tullys must carry an essential gene. B/c we have NO evidence of Ned's generation having any sorts of abilities, and they definitely didn't have direwolves. So it was the Stark/Tully combination that created this latest, magically inclined generation.
Of course, it could just be the comet. IIRC, Bran didn't have wolf dreams until ACOK (though he did have crow dreams, and I wonder if it's important that BR got to him before he bonded with Summer). Neither did the other Starks.
Bottom line--I agree. This all seems like a magical, mystical, confluence. All the attempts to actively, genetically engineer the perfect dragon--we keep being shown that that DOES NOT WORK! Dany's the dragon no one expected. Because of blood, psychology, circumstance, and everything else converging.
Not because of carefully contrived eugenics.
I am going to reserve judgement on this until we know who Dany truly is. If R+L=D (or possibly also if R+A=D), I would say the eugenics worked out exactly as intended.
I second this, Gwindor. I would, however, assert that Nan's "education" is very different from Bloodraven's. Nan's info protects and prepares. I'm pretty sure Bloodraven has plans for Bran to act.
Oh yes, different indeed- but complementary. Nan prepares the Stark kids from a young age, so they will be receptive when Aemon or BR begin their real training. Is it a coincidence that Aemon and BR went to the Wall at the same time? Or was this also the time when Nan first arrived at WF?
