Rhaegar was right there when Tywin came up with the plan to take Duskendale that would very likely have gotten Aerys killed. Barristan's rescue mission should never have worked--the description of it in the World Book is insane.
But there's no mention of Rhaegar objecting to Tywin's plans. Or to Tywin's naming him as a better king. Nothing--sounds like Rhaegar did nothing to stop Tywin's plans--plane which seem guaranteed to kill Aerys
The only counterpoint I can think of is if Rhaegar had a tendency to bow down to Tywin, something we don't have, right? If my understanding is correct any interaction they had is heavily downplayed. Yes, I had a long wrestle with myself before I could consider Rhaegar planning kinslaying, or even knowingly going along with it! That was all I could come up with.
Yes--I could see that. Could also see Jaime's building up the story in his head for a while until it gets twisted.
But his reaction to Rhaegar in his weirwood stump dream--really seems like Jaime didn't know he was a potential catspaw.
First part: Absolutely! Martin has several times pointed out how a POV can be unreliable. I doubt Jamie has had the best time under Robert, so his mind would probably wander to this time and place many times.
Second part: Mind, I have to reread this part, but for the moment I agree. I think the most impoirtant thing was that Rhaegar knew Jamie wouldn't place his vow to protect Aerys first.
Honestly, I'm hoping we get the backstory on any potential "southron ambitions" and the role of Maester Walys. I know it might make the books longer--assuming they ever get finished--but if it turns out that Rickard set his kids up for this mess, intentionally or not--
It might be an echo of Ned's getting his own family into a huge mess--while trying to do something good.
Amen! I haven't even tought much about this yet (southron ambitions, Rickard, HH etc pre-rebellion), but I want this part too. As Maester Walys could still be alive, it wouldn't have to make a huge dent. Then I prefer books that are written to it's full potential. I've read several series that starts off well, but declines and the author can't put the pieces into a good order at the end...
OT: you gave me goosebumps head to toe when I saw you had quoted me! Yesterday I wondered if you'd posted anything since I became a member but didn't check, and 12-18 hours later you were in my notifications!
