Well basically the OofGH video on N+A=J makes this very clear. Eddard ended up having sex with Ashara, who was disguised as the Fisherman's daughter. Then paralleling Robb and Jeyne he marries her in front of the Heart Tree in White Harbor which will allow the reveal via the Weirnet. She has Jon in the Wolf's Den that was created by King Jon Stark years ago. Davos stays in the same place and even comes to White Harbor on the "Merry Midwife." Wylla was a wet nurse from White Harbour and the later cover story as told to Edric Dayne.
Now Eddard goes off to war and meets up with Jon Arryn at Riverrun. Hoster Tully forces Eddard to marry Cat and Jon to marry Lysa as the cost for him joining the war. Robert is under siege at Stoney Sept and despite being married in the eyes of the Old Gods Ned marries Cat in the light of the seven to save Robert and the Rebellion.
So he can't very well tell Cat about Jon being Ashara's and his first trueborn son and that he dishonored himself and her by breaking off his first marriage to be with her and win the war. Also explains why Jon is older than Robb.
It is an interesting theory! Some of the ideas they present are intriguing and rather thought provoking, which I enjoy. I just have a hard time thinking Ned would just allow a marriage to be set aside! He is just too honorable for that, it seems! But maybe not!
I just don't see this one, though. I mean, honestly, if Ned was married, he could have had Benjen marry Catelyn. If Hoster Tully wanted his daughter to be Lady of Winterfell, then Ned could have stepped down and allowed Benjen to be Lord. That seems more honorable that setting aside one wife for another. I don't think that Ned seen Benjen as incapable of ruling! I think that is a more plausible idea for Ned than setting aside a marriage and a wife, but that is just my two-cents.
It does make me curious about polygamy, however. Certainly the Andal's and the Faith frown on polygamy, but what about the First Men. We know some of them still practice some older traditions, such as the first night. Maybe polygamy was once practiced in the north? We have Craster who has many wives (of course, they are also his daughters) but I can't see that Craster is the best person to base this idea on. Tormund Giantsbane hints at having children with more than one woman. Was he married to all of these women, and if so, did those marriages occur concurrently?
As far as the Benjen proposition I don't think there was enough time to make such a agreement. Also I also see that Ned would see being Lord of Winterfell as his duty.
Craster has always been a curious case. I would suspect that polygamy probably isn't too frowned upon but incest seems right out. Even the other Wildlings seem to despise Craster, maybe due to incest maybe because he worshiped the "cold gods."
Tormund does seem to get around. Maybe if you can capture multiple wome, then protect and provide for them it sounds like it would fit Wildling culture.
Also I am getting really sick of people claiming PJ's stuff as fanfiction while clinging to RLJ like Robert clung to a whore tits. None of this is proven or disproven until it appears in the books and they don't seem to be any closer so what can we do but keep going over thoughts and ideas?
Thanks the sheep over at the W really annoy me sometimes. I mean all theories have holes in them but their theories are perfect and true and beyond questioning. Fuck right off self righteous assholes.
Granted there are rather big holes in PJ's theories but that should lead to discussion and not dismissal.
