Well, Ned is calm with Cersei's accusations but he is angry when Catelyn ask's about Ashara and Ned tells her to never ask him about Jon. Cat remembers that is the only time that Ned frightened her! After that, the whisper's of Ashara stopped.
Yes, the reaction is opposite. I'll take a closer look later. Yay! A Ned-only reread!
There is no doubt that Ned wielded great power at Winterfell. I think he used it in several ways, one of which is that the Bael the Bard story is not ever heard at Winterfell, according to Jon's memory. As much of a massive talent Old Nan has for telling stories, I don't think she didn't know that story. I think she must have been told to not ever tell that story.
I've been pondering about Bael the Bard lately. What I find strange is the thought of the Starks telling the story of how they decend from a King-beyond-the-Wall and "only" come from the female Stark line. It doesn't seem like something any Great House would make a big deal out of. So I've wondered if that is a story mainly amongst the wildlings. Basically I'm not sure if that story was known. It does give an explanation for Brandon's reaction at Hh, but I find it strange. Or maybe the Andals have influenced me too much.
Old Nan might have known it and not told it. She knew much and more!
Also, in this same vein, I wonder if the reason that singers and bards did not often travel to Winterfell was because Ned did not welcome them. It could be to keep unwanted stories silent, or if Lyanna did run away with a bard/singer that could be Rhaegar or Mance, then Ned would have every reason to want to keep that influence out of his own household.
Could be! Or a combination as there isn't that much trade to be done elsewhere in the north?
Cersei accuses him of having several possible mothers for his bastard, including a Dornish peasant woman, a whore or Ashara Dayne. Now, Ned doesn't seem upset by anything that Cersei says to him, so it is possible she is wrong about all of her accusations. Or the Dornish peasant or the whore mentioned could actually be Ned's Wylla! Or Wylla is a nickname/false name for Ashara. Or it's a nickname for Lyanna, whom Cersei never mentions as a possible mother for Ned's bastard. Which is interesting that she never even considers incest as a possibility for the Stark family but it's a bit of a paradox since Ned and Cersei are in the godswood discussing her own sibling incest children. Ironic, for certain!
That is possible. And the bolded would make me laugh so hard! Incest is only for Targaryens and special Lannisters! Cersei said so!
I don't remember the moss on the north side of the tree, only the south mentioned once specifically, and the second time the moss is not mentioned on a specific side of a tree but Arya still feels based on that they are traveling the wrong direction. And she wants to go north! Even if they are in the southern hemisphere, North, South, West and East are all still the same direction.
The first passage I took as saying the moss was on the north side and her pointing to the south. Or I read what I wanted to based on my own knowledge. But Martin could have changed it for his world.
It's a bit more vague in this second passage, but it seems like Arya wants to be going north, but the road is taking them south.
Which makes me think of the Sorrows, and how they sail through twice in that mystical way! She does think that it seems like the more she tries to get to Winterfell, the further away she ends up. And that makes me think of the riddle to Dany of how to get to Westeros.
So, again, is Arya confused or is it just me? Help from anyone would be appreciated! This might be my mental Waterloo!
I can take a look tomorrow if you haven't gotten any help by then. It's pretty late where I am.
There are some short stories I would assign as prerequisite reading if I ever taught a course on ASOIAF. I'll rank them in order I find them most relevant...
Thank you! I'll make a note of this! Not sure when I'll get to them as my brains is almost fried with my mega reread!
There are many others I could add, and Maester Sam would likely shuffle the order quite a bit. She would probably remove Guardians too, because she's wrong. LOL There's a character that seems a whole lot like Varys in all the Tuf Voyaging stories, and many heroes that
Hahaha! You're not shy about saying what you mean!

I see elements of so many stories I've read/watched that I've problems with naming them all!

hidden princes everywhere
And people think the Blackfyres were a pain in the ass...
It's definitely a RLigion. Great word!
I should copyright that!
N+A is a great example of rumor. It, like R+L, is not subtle. Neither is Ned+Wylla. Each is stated by characters very clearly for the reader, which is likely a fatal strike against each in GRRM's brand of storytelling.
I hear ominous music! Damn, he weaves an intricate web!
Great point. As snowfyre once pointed out, GRRM is quite the Illusionist.
I'll take a look at that tomorrow!
Indeed! And this is what I think the two tales include. The Last Hero set out with a direwolf, and Symeon Star-Eyes saw direwolves fighting. After all, Ned introduced us to direwolves as hellish canidae.
"You must train them. The kennelmaster will have nothing to do with these monsters, I promise you that. And the gods help you if you neglect them, or brutalize them, or train them badly. These are not dogs to beg for treats and slink off at a kick. A direwolf will rip a man's arm off his shoulder as easily as a dog will kill a rat. Are you sure you want this?"
Yep!
