Even when Tyrion tells him the truth of his situation; Jon still hangs onto the mystique of the place, the stories he has been told. Jon does stubbornly hang on to his idea's of the wall, and when Tyrion does tell Jon what he tells him, Jon (and Ghost) react with anger. But the whole POV thing is tough. Certainly, the wall is not a nice or easy place, but did Tyrion actually influence Jon into believing it was a worse place than it actually is. Tyrion is a bit of an asshole, and also he likes to disparage almost everything. Had Tyrion never said those words to Jon, perhaps Jon would not have felt so disappointed when he got to the wall? A person's mindset is more than half the battle!

It seems likely to me that Benjen knew Mance before he went to the Watch.Do you think that the Night's Watch member that was at Harrenhal, telling stories and trying to round up recruits, could have been Mance? Could Benjen and Mance met that far back in our story?
That being said, I really want to give those two a really good and hard beating for not at the very least warning him of what the Watch truely is!
We have no idea what Ned or Benjen said to Jon, so it's hard to really condemn them. Benjen does seem like he encouraged Jon with thoughts of the wall, then said, never mind, just kidding! And Jon does act like a bit of a baby early in the story, so maybe he just is unwilling to admit that he had been prepared, but just didn't acknowledge it. He needed some tough love from Donal Noye to be thankful for what he has and had.
