I must say, I haven't really looked for this on the internet, it's been something I have been trying to work out on my own, from the lineages. Does anyone know of some essay's or threads that might address this idea? Wraith , voice , arrysfleas , lynn , freyfamilyreunion ? Since I popped the top of another of my cracked pot idea's, I might as well ask for help and hope everyone doesn't think I am bat shit crazy!
I have always found the idea of Torrhen bending the knee and gaining nothing special for his submission rather odd. I don't think we have any idea about what kind of arrangement that Torrhen (or Brandon Snow and the three maester's) worked out with Aegon, but I can't imagine that negotiations that lasted all night involved nothing more than 1) I kneel to you 2) you don't kill me or my army 3) by the way, here is the crown my family as worn for thousands of years, and our kingship right along with it, 4) let's both have a nice life. That could have been done with no negotiating, especially when we get the impression that it was possible that Brandon Snow felt like he could kill those dragons. There is so much we are missing from that story, I think.
The world book tells us that Torrhen had at least one daughter, who had to marry into the Arryn family, and "sons" who were not happy about that, and didn't even go to the wedding. We know this Ronnel Arryn eventually died, but we don't know what happened to Torrhen's daughter. At this point Aegon and his sisters had produced no heirs, but they were all young and I am sure that children were expected. Son's and daughters. Perhaps one of those daughters that Aegon could have produced would have married into the north. It's a complete guess, but there has to be some benefit to not going to war against Aegon that Torrhen should have earned, that the Riverlands, the Westerlands, the Crownlands, and the Reach didn't get. The Vale and the North submitted to Aegon's rule without a battle, and I would think that should mean something. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Of course, Aegon never produced any daughters, that we know of, certainly no legitimate ones, and there are no rumor's of bastards for Aegon, so probably not. Finally, he produced two son's, but by then, there was possibly no Stark female to marry. Again, pure speculation. I will stop with that, but my mind is certainly open to possibilities.
I think the gap in the Stark lineage in the world book (a larger gap for the Lannister's, actually) is hiding something from us. We know nothing of Torrhen's son's, and we don't pick up the lineage again until Cregan's grandfather, so it's possible that we are missing 80-100 years of marriages in the north. GRRM is withholding that information for a reason, and I think it's because we have a Stark/Targaryen marriage or two. Now, most of my thoughts are speculation based on one random statement from Ned, but GRRM planted that line well over 20 years ago, and he must mean something by it, and the fact that I think GRRM is hiding some important things from us. I think it would have had to be a Targaryen princess marrying the into the Stark's and I am working on a few ideas. I plan to keep digging, because it's more fun than shoveling snow!
