Side note – I am glad that Sandor still had a fear of fire. That kind of PTSD doesn’t just go away.
Actually, I agree with this, and this isn't shocking that he has retained this fear. In that "Beyond the Wall" episode from last season, I remembered that he froze when faced with that flaming snow bear, which actually caused Thoros to be injured. So, the Hound freezing, being useless and costing other's their lives isn't new. Although, apparently with the right motivation, he can get past his fear.
When homeboy grabbed her neck, I heard ice crack. I thought he was freezing her. I held my breath again.
Maybe there is still hope that he turned her, and that will be the huge plot twist they have been promising us. Although the twist is supposed to come from GRRM and the books and in the books, there is no Dragon Riding King of the Zombies!!! Bran has also been touched, and actually has a hand print to prove it. I wonder if that disappeared like "poof" the rest of the Night King's marks?
I thought the tender moment between Sansa and Tyrion was a nice touch for their show characters. I’m glad that D&D didn’t have Sansa singing and praying like she was during the Battle of the Blackwater. That would have been wrong. Wrong for her character, wrong for the North and just wrong. But you could fertilize Westeros with the mountain of shit that I am glad D&D didn’t do.
Sansa's character doesn't need to pray and sing to help be a leader to her people. The fact that she doesn't shows that she has grown out of her child-like mindset, however, she talks about what a great leader she is (for two seasons now), and how she is concerned for the north, and she can't even be bothered to pretend to share a comforting look with her people. Nope! She just skulks with Tyrion, bitches about Daenerys (who might be an asshole but at least she is still out there fighting and trying to make a difference, and so I applaud Missandei's truth in this case) and pretends she doesn't know how to use a knife. Can you cut a steak, Sansa? Then you know how to use a knife.
Perhaps they are using her to show how futile any comfort is at this moment, but isn't comfort in times of despair a basic bit of humanity, something that makes us human? Of course, what was supposed to be about humanity became a story of CGI and flames (both red and blue). But they basically have her arrive in the crypts, admit she is brave for admitting she is a coward and can't do anything, and then they let her prove it. This felt like they pissed away whatever character development they have been trying to prove that she has gained during this show. Much like they did with Sam sobbing on a pile of bodies (which also felt like such a rip-off of Samwise Gamgee lying down and crying in Return of the King that it made me cringe). Pissed all that character development away! Sam the Slayer, indeed! Poof!
As for the tender moment between Sansa and Tyrion, if I thought the show had any plot left, I would think they are trying to have her manipulate Tyrion to betray Dany, which would show us that Sansa has learned from the greatest female manipulator in the series, which is Cersei! Pretty much how Sansa acted in this episode is how Cersei acted in the Blackwater, except Sansa didn't try to teach anyone to use the weapon between her legs (although I think she was paying attention that night) or get wretchedly drunk!
I've got several smalltalk with workmates about this episode. they just don't care about our book nerd theories, analysis and other foreshadowing. They don't even know there is no NK in the books.
All they want is huge badass moments. D&D know this part too well.
It doesn't even matter if you are a book reader or not, if you have theories or not, it seems like we got handed a steaming pile of flaming poo! it might look pretty as the fire dances on the surface, but it's still crap on a plate! And I feel like they think their whole audience is in 2nd grade, and honestly, it pisses me off. This show used to be smart! It had the great cinematography, the CGI was top notch, the set's and costumes had great detail, but, most importantly, it was smart. It's not smart any more. It's almost the opposite of that, but we are just expected not to notice because the fire works are pretty!
I had this same breaking point last season, and it was also episode 3, with the whole Jon and Dany meeting, which is where Jon started being a pussy and deciding instead of being a King of a separate kingdom, he was just Dany's prisoner at Dragonstone. After that, the whole season just tasted bad. Until "Beyond the Wall" and it got worse, when I didn't even think that was possible. I really fear the next 3 episodes. Honestly, not excited for them at all and that makes me sad.
