Erikson confirmed having handed in *Fall of Light* some time in June. The size is in the ballpark of tWoW (900 pages+). Projected release date: Feb 2016. Editing, printing, distributing at a normal pace: 8 months.
aDwD was handed in April 2011, released July 2011: That´s 3 months, and as the editing shows, a shitty, rushed job.

I figured it was irony a little later, but I'm usually one (especially on forums) to give one the benefit of the doubt of their being genuine until I get to know their personality.

If Martin hands in tWoW today, earliest release by X-mas - doing a shitty, rushed job. Normal release date: Right for S6 Ep.1.
Just for all those delusionals over at WotW because Martin keeps giving them a smirky *Winter is coming* response.
How much power over editing does GRRM have? Because Rowling didn't have her books edited after HP 5 I think? And look what happened: we got Harry Potter Goes Camping. We now have Dany Hangs in Meereen.
i wonder if he's part of the problem. With popularity, maybe he insists on keeping more stuff in the book? I find it ironic that for someone who started out as an editor, his books sure seem to lack for it.

Damn, grrl, there was one kick-ass reddit discussion at the beginning of this year, where somebody dug out the original submitted first manuscript of aDwD, which GRRM had donated to some Texan University librray. In it were all the comments by Groell and Martin´s replies. From the screencaps that made the round, it became very clear that GRRM had total power over the process, overruling Groell on her various attempts to cut the bloat (like putting back in all the *Where do whores go ?* that Groell wanted to cut. A complete ego-trip. The manuscript was locked away pretty quickly because there were spoilers of future books in the comments.

Yeah, Texas A&M, right? There were spoilers? So people can't look over the manuscript? Why didn't he donate it to Univ. New Mexico I wonder? Are there screen caps of spoilers, or are they gone now?

Some day, maybe, some student of fantasy literature may want to peruse all of these partial manuscripts, and document how A DANCE WITH DRAGONS changed over the years. Every time I printed out a copy to send to my editors, I made a second and sent it to the Special Collections at Texas A&M University, where my papers are kept. Maybe someone will get a master's thesis out of my struggles with this book. And who knows, maybe in the end he or she will conclude that I was making the book worse and worse all along.

You mean some day at a sleep study institute, the copies of the Dance manuscript will be tested as a treatment for insomnia...

I don't know Karsa either but from the attachment I figured. I maybe wrong but since he has neither confirmed or denied my suspicion. I'm guessing I was right.
Well, I run IWC? nowadays, which should make it clear.

There was at least one identified: Benjen not Coldhands.
I don´t know what screencaps are left ot not. At least at reddit. We copied some over to IWC?, but I would have to dig to see where they are buried.
That same reddit user went through the early version of the first 13 chapters of agot, and found, quite interestingly, that Illyrio did not give Dany the Dragon eggs at her wedding. In the 1993 letter, she was to find them on her own.
That actually changed her character quite a bit, I think, and made the Dragon-bond much more intimate.
"I can see it. You have more of the north in you than your brothers."
Am I the only one who has no problem whatsoever with the DwD editing?
Maybe. I dunno. I read it fast, but I don't remember liking it as much as the first 3.

I don't have a problem with it. Dance has some amazing chapters. Although, I see no reason why Feast and Dragons couldn't be trimmed down into one complete book.
Either Martin's writing has become less tight and directed over the years, or his editors have become more lax in their approach. It's probably a lot of both.

Ah, ok. I think I had the luxury of having read in late, i.e. after knowing that there was still a lot to come, and not having waited 10+ years for it. If what you want from the book is resolution, or moving quickly towards the end, then I can see how you'll be disappointed.
If you read it as if it is the middle book of a trilogy, it becomes a better read.

Martin likes starting things, not finishing them. He himself admits that. Fuck, in yet another thread over at reddit months ago, they posted his *sales* pitch to Harper Collins back in 93/94 where he explicitly discusses that point. Martin is a short-story / one volume novel specialist for that reason. A multi-volume cycle like that had that risk of what we are seeing today right from Day One.
