The Martells are descended from the Rhyonar and the Daynes are actually First Men, NOT Andals. There isn't a whole lot a Andal culture that has permeated Dorne. Which is why Dorne is so much different culturally than the rest of Westeros. They have less influence of the religiously puritanical faith of the Seven (thus you have the liberal sexual values, the lack of stigma towards bastards and paramours, etc.)In stead of relying on a shaky only-by-ear-head-canon (I haven't read the World book yet), I actually searched and found:
The Andals made their mark on Dorne, as they did on all Westeros south of the Neck.
The stony Dornish [as the Daynes] have the most in common with those north of the mountains and are the least touched by Rhoynish custom.
I do have an excellent memory, good ser! The latter seems to indicate that mix I mentioned, and does not rule out the more tolerant view of paramours previously discussed. My point stands.
I couldn't find anything on Martells and Daynes growing up together right now, but I'll have another look later (or else it will just bug the hell out of me, and I'm a whole book away in my reread!).

As far as your point about the Sword of the Morning well, I think you're onto something. Specifically the Sword of the Morning, is not merely a title of lordship or an ancestral birthright, but rather an office appointed ONLY to a member of House Dayne BY members OF House Dayne and ONLY if said member is deemed worthy to wield both the blade Dawn (and all the attendant martial skill required to wield it well), and the responsibility of the office (as being an exemplar of knighthood and honor and chivalry). Otherwise Dawn stays at Starfall stored away awaiting the next Sword of the Morning to rise. Or Dawn if you will HAHAHA. Sorry. I love puns. Exactly! If it was a mere, but infinately cool, ancestral sword it would probably not have all this attached to it. An office would reasonably be expected to intail more than just being an excellent knight, anyone could be an excellent knight. But why share more than you have to? It also helps create a legend!
Puns, haha! Sometimes puns almost takes over my brain, and I can't think without making at least two per sentence! No need to apologise

But the real heart of the matter is this: what is the significance of the office? Is it magical in nature? Mayhaps. Who knows. Mayhaps it is simply a kind of symbol. A reminder to all Daynes of what their house stands for and why it matters to uphold it. Because Winter is Coming. And the reason why everybody loves the Daynes! Seems to be one of the most popular Houses.
I'm in the camp who believe the Daynes played a crutial role in ending the LN, thus that the office holds information relating to this. Possibly details otherwise unknown. And a nice sprinkeling of magic as well; but maybe something that will only kick in when needed - aka during another Long Night?
