Isolating only part of that statement makes it read as very harsh. Perhaps I should not have used the word only (not meant to indicate Jaime alone of all character's) but to indicate "while"or "but" or an act that continues after another act.
Yeah, I read it and thought it was an extremely strong statement, which lead me to try to think of another (even minor) redemption arc. I can't think of any. People learn. People mature. People change, but I'm not sure anyone other than Jamie move in a positive direction in moral or ethical terms. Obviously, Dany is debatable, is it better to be a spineless tool or a sometimes brutal warrior of liberation? Jaime may yet turn in a darker direction, but his current arc is toward honor and maybe even compassion
The point is, Jaime grow's in his development of a human who becomes less superficial, whereas I don't see that growth in Sansa. Perhaps Sansa needs to loose her beauty, like Jaime loses his sword hand, before she can truly start to grow to see things more importantly. But I don't think that GRRM will take Sansa's beauty away from her, therefore I wonder if she is somewhat stuck in her development.
Perhaps if Sansa had been able to spend more time with Margaery Tyrell, she could have learned some valuable lesson's about people and not judge people so much on physical beauty or lovely clothing or precious jewels. Instead, Sansa has Cersei and Littlefinger to guide her, where as Jaime was given Brienne the Beauty. Jaime was perhaps more blessed in this than Sansa.
I think this comparison is very interesting. Hadn't really noticed the similarity in judging by surface appearance, but it is apt. Without earlier Jaime POV's it's hard to know whether his reaction to Brienne is due to her rather extreme appearance, and the fact that he found a sensitive spot to poke at, or whether that type of judging by appearance was typical of him. We know he admired Rhaegar, who seemed to be beautiful, do we know that of SAD?
I have a hard time assessing Margaery. Is she wise or cunning or are her actions entirely guided by others? Each seems to be a possibility. I'm not sure she has much more depth of character than Sansa. Or she may have a great deal of it. She may be a skillful manipulator or she may be an able puppet.
I can only wonder how Sansa would view Brienne's physical features, and how she might judge her based on that, and I question if Sansa could ever look past those physical features to see how good a person Brienne is in her soul, in her core?
We may get to find out. Brienne is seeking Sansa. I don't expect Brienne's arc to have any lasting success. But it would be a GRRM move to let Brienne find Sansa and have Sansa be horrified and run away from her.
She seems to have done this with the Hound and his ugly, burned face, but not with Tyrion. However, Tyrion is a Lannister, and in that way, Sansa may never be able to alter her thoughts on him. GRRM has certainly made these character's complicated.
My greatest hopes for Sansa were in her relationship with the Hound. I'm not sure how I wanted it to play out, but there seemed to be potential for growth for her, of which we got hints, but not much more.
Sansa is gone from the wedding at the time of Joffrey's actual death, but this dog is there, and Sansa, while bonding with a dog in the vale, has memories of Joff's death that don't quite fit the timeline. I think somehow she is skin changing that dog, and perhaps other's, to see things.
I had never noticed this discrepancy in the timeline, and didn't pay attention to either dog. My work involves careful reading, but of short reports and documents, not tomes
this has nothing to do with this Arya chapter we are on. Oops!
